New for 2020 - OPST Micro Skagit Series Two Handed Rods

Designed By Skagit Legend Ed Ward

These rods represent decades of dedication purely to sustained-anchor two-handed casting. A rod reflecting its designer and a true illustration of Ed’s vision.

Olympic Peninsula Skagit Tactics is proud to release our very own line of Micro Skagit and Pure Skagit Two-Handed Rods, designed by Ed Ward. We developed our rods over five years during which we refined the taper to represent Ed’s concepts. It will initially include six rods in total, ranging from a 9’9” Micro Skagit Two-Handed 3wt up to a 11’6” 8wt, and every whole rod weight in-between.

This line-up will be classified by design differences, into two categories:
  • Micro Skagit - 399-4, 4100-4, 5104-4
  • Pure Skagit - 6108-4, 7110-4, 8116-4, 9123-4

OPST Micro Skagit

The Micro Skagit category consists of three rods rated to cast 275 grain heads or lower. Their tapers have been designed to pleasantly accommodate both single-handed Spey/Skagit-type casts and two-handed Spey/Skagit-type casts.

Whether you’re picking apart small to medium sized rivers on foot swinging soft hackles, throwing big streamers into the bank from a boat, or busting big bushy salmon flies into the teeth of an afternoon breeze, these nifty little hybrid rods should have a permanent place in your quiver.

The 9’9” 3wt and 10’4wt both have cigar-style single-welled upper grips and switch-style lower handles, while the 10’ 4” 5wt has a grip/handle configuration like the Pure Skagit Rod style outlined in the next section. Rod color is Matte Black with Blue Accent Wraps

Pieroway Renegade Series Rods

New to Gorge Fly Shop, Pieroway Renegade Rods

Jerry French worked with Pieroway Rod Company of Calgary, Alberta Canada to produce a compact series of switch rods designed specifically to work with Olympic Peninsula Skagit Tactics Commando Head Systems.

We could split this rod series in two with the smaller versions being transformable trout spey rods. They can go to single hand, single hand skagit or two hand spey and the removable fight butt enables that versatility. The 6 weight and up play into the switch or compact spey category for steelhead.

Being a trout swing junkie in the dead of winter I got my hands on a 490-4 trout size version to experiment with. Well I didn't need to do much of that experimenting to figure out what this rod does well. I short order I had dialed in to the Renegade and enjoying some easy, groovy casting while enjoying all the power and recovery I needed.

It's a soulful rod that just goes about it's business much the same way as I do. Don't over-think it and success will come easy.

I loaded this 4 weight with a Scientific Anglers Spey Lite Integrated Skagit in 210gr. It matched up just the way I like it. Again, don't over-think it! I'm sure whatever line choice you make be it OPST Commando, Airflo Scout or RIO's New InTouch Skagit Trout Spey will be happy to put a load in this rod. Just trust the grain charts and go with it.

I've been experimenting with single hand spey or single hand skagit for a few years now and especially on the trout scene. I've cast many different rods in the 8' to 9'6" length range and have a whole bunch of opinions about all of them. The sweetness of the Renegade is it really cast with a honest spey action. It's not "made up", or made to work, it literally feels spey from the first snap T.

The progressive medium-fast action of the Pieroway Renegade not only makes for enjoyable casting but also provides a good trout fighting, tippet protecting action. This is one of my concern areas for just grabbing any old 5 weight fast action rod and making it your single hand skagit stick. While you can get good cast from them oftentimes they don't do well in the fish fighting department and broken tippets come easy. Not so with Renegade.
The rod build itself is quite unique. Starting with the removable fight butt on small models 3, 4, 5 wights. It comes with a screw in plug to cap it off when fight butt not in use. Reel seat is quality, double locking nut with woven graphite insert. Rubberized cork handle is a bonus providing alot of grip in frigid cold swing water.
The rod blank is a pewter color and guides are wrapped in army green. I appreciate the lack of color in favor of stealth. The titanium rod guides are smoke in color and nicely over-sized which really helps limit the ice in freezing temp fishing situations.

The feel of this 490-4 Renegade is very compact all the way from casting stroke to grip feel. It keeps your stoke in tight giving full control to the angler. Its compact feel lets you enjoy single hand cast with line hauling all the while when one reaches for two hand it feels confident in shooting line.

The final cast...

One would have a hard time finding a rod like this especially for the price. Well actually, you can't find a rod like this at any price. At this time of writing I know of no other production rod company who builds a 9 foot trout spey rod. So regardless of price the Renegade's uniqueness and versatility make it hands down a favorite in my single hand quiver.

For me, the success of trout spey doesn't come from big, long cast and long river swinging runs. It's a short order game, ambush style and reaching in to ultra-lite skagit. This is trout spey, and Renegade is a honest trout spey rod.

New from Burkheimer - 2018/2019

A couple interesting additions from C.F. Burkheimer for the new year.

C.F Burkheimer Single Hand Spey shown in Classic

Single Hand Spey

A couple years ago Burkie, (CF Burkheimer) introduce a line of rods called Single Hand Spey. It started out with a 7104-4 and 8104-4. New for 2019, 6104-4. All Single Hand Spey Rod models are 10'4" long and crafted in 4 piece versions now offered in a 6wt as well as the previous 7wt and 8wt.

Single handed spey tactics have come along ways especially since the short skagit evolution started by OPST Commando Heads and now extending into RIO, Airflo, and Scientific Anglers offerings as well.

Single Hand Spey Rods are ideal for small-ish water. It gives the angler versatility when space is at a minimum. If you already spey cast then single hand spey will come natural and if you are just learning to spey cast some find that process much easier when they are only learning the one hand approach instead of two hand. Single handed spey is fun, practical and will advance your overall fly casting tactics quiver of tricks.

Streamer

C.F Burkheimer Streamer shown in Titanium Finish
There are those who fish streamers then there are streamer anglers. No streamer angler is ever satisfied with any standard action fly rod. The demands of repetitive casting with large flies causes one to look for any advantage they can get from a specialized rod.

A couple years ago Burkie, introduce a line of rods simple called Streamer. The model started out with a 688-4 and 788-4. New for 2019, 888-4. All Streamer Rod models are 8'8" long and crafted in 4 piece versions.

There are a couple of advantages to keeping a streamer rod under 9 foot. Much of this angling is done from a drift boat therefore the shorter length help rod/boat management especially considering the fact that no streamer angler only shows up with one rod. Another advantage is a short lever. Basic physics tells us that the shorter the lever the easier it will be for one to control. This is an important function when fly size can push toward a whole small rabbit package and your muscle power must be maintained for the duration of the day.

In addition to length, the Streamer also employs an action that is all to its own. The taper is designed to move cargo efficiently. Aside from big streamers they are also quite capable with heavy nymphs, deer hair dries and large wind resistant poppers. The new 888-4 size pushes the extreme in fly size handling as well as trophy size handling.

Do you have streamers hanging from your rear view mirror? If yes, then you are the guy Burkheimer built these rods for.

Two Handed Spey 6139-4

One doesn't have to search hard to find some of the most sought after spey rods on the planet. We know it so well that attempt to keep pre-ordered custom, In-Stock, on hand, ready to ship, two handers all the time.

So why a 6139-4? We have the source that will fill you in on what you might find interesting about this length/power of a two hander. Read Cody's report on Burkheimer 6139-4 and Airflo Delts Spey II 6/7

Please keep in mind when buying a Burkie; Unless we have it in-stock, it is 99.9% likely to be a special order. Rods can takes several months from order date to ship date. Even we wait for the rods we have in stock. This is why we special order and stock some rods. Check often cause they don't stay around very long. See In-Stock Inventory here...

Tight Lines,
Greg

Scientific Anglers Spey Lite Series breakdown

Two years ago Scientific Anglers introduced the Spey Lite Series of single hand / two hand lines designed specifically for the needs of the trout spey or any lite action spey angler.

These new lines answered a long sought after solution to anglers wanting to fish single hand skagit and/or needing the smooth connection of an integrated line for smooth casting and stripping especially suited to smaller rod and smaller water situations.

New additions have been added this year to further fulfill the needs of the trout spey / micro spey angler.

Here's the run down...

Spey Lite Skagit Integrated
I call this the star of the show because it's what many anglers, like myself, had been asking for for quite some time. While head/running line systems have a solid place in spey, soon after trout spey really started to take off, many anglers experienced frustration with the hitch of the loop system. Especially noticeable in smaller waters and stripping streamer situations. A cry for an integrated line was heard by Scientific Anglers.
Key features of this integrated skagit include short powerful skagit head, black head marker point that is also textured to create an audible reference, and a slick, well matched, thin diameter shooting line. For 2019 S/A added a 390gr and 420gr version to expand the Spey Lite options.

New for 2019 - Spey Lite Skagit Integrated Intermediate
All the same great features as the floating version but with a fully intermediate sinking head. Now you can break below surface chop and cut through strong currents to have better control of your swing.

Spey Lite Skagit (Head Only) Floating and Intermediate Versions
Left-Floating - Right-Intermediate
Spey Lite Skagits, both Floating and Intermediate are also available in head only versions. Same great, powerful short heads as the integrated line but head only, allowing for the angler to choose their choice of running/shooting lines. Note that since these are head only with loop to loop connections they do not include the textured audible reference point.

Spey Lite Scandi Integrated
While the Skagit may be the star, the Scandi certainly plays the role of best supporting. It's especially effective for anglers who want to play the finesse side of trout spey with flies like soft hackles, wets, lightly weighted leaches and even skating flies.
Spey Lite Scandi is single hand rod friendly but I really like the responsiveness I get on my longer trout spey rods. With just a long leader, a double soft hackle rig can be so effective and effortless to cast. Tight loops and easy turnover will highlight the finesse side of trout spey.

Like the Integrated Skagit, Scandi Integrated also features the visual black, audible textured head to shooting line transition for easy casting point identification.
Sizes 390gr and 420gr have been added for 2019.

Spey Lite Scandi Heads - New for 2019
Two years ago when introduced, the scandi was only offered in an integrated version. Demand for a head only version was quickly realized. New for 2019, Scientific Anglers met that demand. Pair this scandi head with a slick shooting line and watch it fly. Achieving tight loop, distance cast with trout spey size rods is absolutely achievable with these scandi heads and with grain weights reaching into the 6 weight spey class summer steelheaders have new game.

Whether you like scandi or skagit, integrated or head system, Scientific Anglers has your lite line spey solution.

Scientific Anglers Spey Lite Skagit Head Intermediate

Scientific Anglers Spey Lite Series of lines has helped to improve all aspects of trout spey, switch and single hand spey forms whether is be in the form of skagit heads, scandi heads, with or without integrated running / shooting lines.

New for 2019, Spey Lite Skagit Head Intermediate. Available in a head only or integrated version, Spey Lite Skagit Intermediate allows the angler the ability to swing his fly under the surface without surface disturbance interference.

By maintaining the skagit head just under the surface things like wind and uneven current will have little to no effect on the fly enabling a near perfect swing.
This intermediate type of head also creates a better transition from head to sink tip for increase is sink depth achieved as well as less hinge effect during casts.

RIO - Behind the Brand with Simon Gawesworth

RIO - Behind The Brand - Simon Gawesworth
"Casting, That's my real drug! Everything to me is about the cast. The cast is the one skill you can control." Simon Gawesworth

I get a lot of inspiration from Simon Gawesworth in this RIO video.
On one hand lakes are something I tend to ignore for trout fishing. Why? I don't know but I want to change that and set aside some time to take advantage of this type of trout fishing.

The next inspiring scene is Simon talking about the cast. "The cast is the one skill you can control." I find the better I understand casting the more I want to know. It's a constant strive to master casting and with that comes a never ending desire to continue to learn and improve. I never want to be able to say "I know all I need to know about fly casting." To me that would be the end of my passion.

The biggest inspiration for me comes in watching Simon cast. Great filming of single hand spey cast. Seeing these single hand cast really inspires me to continue learning the art of total line control with a single hand fly rod. The freedom one can achieve with a simple emerger rig, no indicator, tight line and learning how to manipulate flies for aggressive strikes is above and beyond controlled standards found in much of today's fly fishing.

I've been working with a single hand Sage X 597-4 fly rod with a RIO Single Handed Spey 3D F/H/I Fly line equipped with a 9ft leader and pair of soft hackle flies. The combination has helped me find incredible freedom in a simplistic way of fly fishing. Skilled while uncomplicated!

RIO's How To, S2 E5: How To Make A Single Handed Spey Cast

Simon really hits the nail on the head in this short video. If you think "Spey" is not for you...Think Again! Spey tactics is about casting and making cast that traditional overhead tactics cannot effectively achieve.

This video fits so perfect with my recent article Single Handed Skagit - How to get started.
While I focus on single hand skagit all the same principles apply.

The line Simon uses is RIO'S InTouch Single Hand Spey. The taper of this line allows for effective rod loading in order to make spey cast. It also is very good overhead casting line. What makes this line different then a skagit system is the Single Hand Spey is designed to use with standard trout leaders and not intended to be used with sink tips like a skagit system is.

I really like how Simon breaks the spey cast down to a roll cast. His explanation of, in order to change direction of a roll cast you must move the train tracks. When setting up a spey cast my first thought is on how to "set up" in order to cast in the intended direction. The cast itself is basically a roll cast. I find the more one become comfortable making roll casts the easier spey casting will come to them. Think about this the next time you are trying to learn to spey cast: How good is my roll cast? If it's not good neither will your spey cast be good.

Scientific Anglers Spey Lite Micro Skagit Review

Swinging Micro Skagits

Are you into mini micro skagits? Read on...

Not into the micro skagits? Could be time to reconsider. Do you swing flies or want to swing flies? Are you interested in spey but hold back due to the many facets of gear acquisition and/or line confusion? Read on!!!

Brief History - What is Micro Skagit

We can accredit OPST with the short (micro) skagit revolution and while it was born on the heels of the steelhead angler those guys had enough insight to realize an open door into the emerging trout spey world. They built their micro skagits heads all the way down to 150 grain and short enough to open up the whole scene of micro skagit single handed rod spey casting. It is a revolution in the fly world that whether you've experienced it or not has created a dramatic change in the way we will view spey casting and fly fishing forever.

When I first entered trout spey nearly five years ago, an area of difficulty that exposed itself very early on was the lack of ability to fish close. Pre-Commando, light grain skagit heads at that time were just downsized from steelhead gear and still way too long. Connecting loops constantly got in the way when trying to fish short. While attempting to boycott head loop systems I tried every integrated switch/streamer version of line on the market from then to now and they all just, in my opinion, failed on the trout stream.

Short micro skagit heads such as commando and trout max solved the situation for most anglers but still the ability to strip and fish very short was interrupted by a loop connection. Every time I attempted to strip in close the head loop snags the guides, every time I attempt to cast close the head loop snags the guides and now that I do so much single handed micro spey the loop to loop connection interferes with my ability to haul my single handed spey cast.

I've been asking for a micro skagit seamlessly attached to a thin diameter running line. You'd think this would be a simple request yet don't ask me to run down the list of past failures because some would not like what I have to say about their current offerings.

Scientific Anglers Listened and Responded!

S/A Spey Lite Skagit

Two versions of this skagit line, Spey Lite Skagit Head and Spey Lite Integrated Skagit. I'm going to kick off this review with the fully integrated running line version

Impressions from actual testing
Starting with a subtle color called horizon they extruded a slick, durable, short, micro skagit head while ending it into an easy to see, in any light, black marker section and finally seamlessly integrates into a thin diameter subtle horizon color running line.

S/A added one additional feature with texturing on the black head marker section to create an audible reference which indicates the head has reached the tip top. At first I didn't give this much thought but after using it I started to realize I was locating the head with my ears and no longer needed to watch for the head marker. The small subtle section of textured line created no interference and the added reference proved to be a cool benefit. The textured section starts immediately at the end of the head and runs about 3 feet of line. Note that this is the only textured part of this full integrated skagit line and the head only version does not have this feature.

Casting Performance

Very Impressive! This is a real deal micro skagit! I put the integrated version skagit through a variety of test subjects including actual two hand trout spey rods as well as four and five weight single hand rods. I easily adapted to all my test rods with many styles of cast including Snap T's, Reverse Snap T's, Snap C's, Reverse Double Speys, T&G's and Single Hand forward hauls. All cast where easy to execute with appropriate tips applied. The Spey rods of course handled T-8 with ease while the single hand rods are best to be equipped with polyleaders. I was able to cast 8' of T-8 with a 9' 5 weight rod with relative ease. I not going to elaborate more into this area because it is a grey area. Limitations of sink tip choice have more to do with the power in the rod being used and ones casting ability. With my equipment and ability I could easily push the limits beyond the printed S/A recommendations found in the product specs.

I'll save you the squalls of smooth, tight and precise analogies and tell you the way it is. It's a skagit! By design they are created to chuck spey cast with relative ease while utilizing sink tips and weighted flies. Spey Lite Skagit performs these duties precisely and effectively.

Test Subjects
Aside the qualities we already talked about this line also benefits from a very slick integrated shooting line. I measured the running/shooting line diameter on both a 210 and 240 grain lines and it micrometers at about .028".  I found the handling and shooting ability of the integrated running line to exceed my expectations on both trout spey two hand rods as well as single hand spey rod setups.

I feel the integrated version of this line really benefits single handed spey rod setups. With the Spey Lite Integrated Skagit on a (for example), 9 foot 5 weight fly rod I can swing flies with mild sink tips or polyleaders and strip them in all the way to the leader. I can also add a "haul" to my forward cast for ease of distance without a loop connection interference. Whether fishing single hand rods, switch rods or trout spey rods the Spey Lite Integrated Skagit gives the angler more versatility "in tighter", on smaller water.

Brownie Likes the swing

Spey Lite Skagit Heads

For many anglers, separate heads and running/shooting/mono lines are better for their purpose. S/A Spey Lite Skagit also comes in a head only configuration. Same great subtle horizon color with black marker rear section. The head version does not have the textured audible section. The head lengths are identical to the integrated version and I found in testing, performance matched exactly.

Line Identification

One simple feature I really like about S/A lines is their vertical printed line identification. I find vertical is much easier to read then the horizontal printing others use. Also with the black rear section there is no guessing which end is what on the head only versions.

Line identification easy to read

I think the integrated version is a slam dunk for those interested in single hand rod spey techniques and also a great choice for those wanting to get into trout spey and not be hassled with loops or too many running line and head choices. The head only version is perfect for those are already accustomed to these systems and/or want that versatility of head and running line choices. Either way they are both excellent performing and high quality that we've come to expect from Scientific Anglers.

Update:
Check out Greg's Review for...

Three New line options from S/A have caught my interest in a big way.

Spey Lite Skagit Head
Here is S/A's entry into the short skagit trend. The lengths look really good especially the 180gr and 210gr sizes. I see these as most of their game is with single handed spey casting. Big plus on the Black butt on these heads for easy visibility. That's something OPST is really missing out on.

The fully integrated skagit version. All the same head weights and lengths but fully integrated (no loops) into a running line. This could be our answer to the trout spey guy that needs to be able to strip in tight and/or make the occasional overhead cast.

I've been dreaming of this type of scandi for some time now. With today's short trout speys and single hand rods a quest is for a line that presents well, fully integrated,(no loops) and is capable of a decent overhead cast. Scandi is the answer but up until now they were all too long for small rod use. This line might be a serious game changer for many two hand trout anglers.
Note that the black head marking area is also textured so that it creates a noise (feel) when it hits the rod tip giving the angler an audible sign that the head has reached the rod. This feature is also found on the Spey Lite Integrated Skagit.

Some very interesting new lines from Scientific Anglers. I'll be reporting soon on some trout spey applications in both two hand and single hand rod situations.
