Water Temps on the drop - Try this Airflo Polyleader

After a beautiful beginning to fall, it looks like colder weather is approaching. When the water temps drop into the low fifties and beyond, sometimes steelhead need a little extra coaxing to move for a dry line fly. Enter the Slow Sink Polyleader. This leader is light enough to cast comfortably on most Scandi setups and will get your hairwing down just a little more. You wouldn’t think 6 inches below the surface is much different than 2, but it sure can be!

What's Going on with Airflo?

The Big News...

Airflo Sold to an American Company called The Mayfly Group. You might be familiar with them as the parent company of Ross and Abel Fly Reels.

A little History...

Airflo is, or was, a UK company. Airflo Fly Lines are made in the UK. Tim Rajeff of Rajeff Sports, (Echo Fly Rods and Air-Lock Strike Indicators), was the sole USA Distributor for Airflo Fly Lines.

Earlier this year Airflo sold to The Mayfly Group. Shortly after the sale it was announced that Rajeff Sports would no longer be the USA Distributor as of August 1st, 2020.

So what's this mean for Airflo fans?

The short term answer is BACKORDERS! Yes, you guessed it, Right now we are in endless backorders and the end of that is no where in sight. Even if you ask when will your line be available, we simply don't have an answer.

We, Gorge Fly Shop, did what we could to secure as much stock as possible, especially in the "spey" realm but with that said we are running into alot of "No stock, No ETA" conditions.

While we have a bunch of holes in our inventory we still do have alot of Airflo fly and spey lines in stock. Your best option is to give us a call to inquire about the line you want. If we have it great and if we don't we can recommend you an alternative line choice until Airflo fly lines are back up in stock.

When will that be?

Your guess is as good as ours. Currently I would tell you to not wait for your Airflo Fly Line that you have big plans for on an upcoming trip. Again, we have no idea when stock will start to show up at our door.

What is Gorge Fly Shop future with Airflo

As we roll forward Gorge Fly Shop absolutely plans on remaining an Airflo Fly Line dealer and rest assure we will have orders in place to rebuild our inventory asap!

While Gorge Fly Shop is a full service Fly Fishing Retailer we have long been committed to being experts in fly lines along with a broad inventory and knowledge to make that happen.

For now please be patient on backorders and call or email us with your Airflo list. We have fly lines.

Airflo Salmon Steelhead 10' Polyleaders

Airflo Polyleaders have many applications. They make great tips for skagit and scandi spey applications. They also work well for many trout spey applications. Quickly turn your floating single hand line into a sink tip.

Airflo Polyleader construction starts with a 24lb mono core that is than taper coated with the same material as fly lines are made from. The result is a uniform, strong leader that provide excellent turnover.

Airflo polyleaders feature welded loops on the back end and perfection loops on the front.

Airflo FLO Tips

The spey angler has alot of sink tip choices. Once you migrate beyond the basic T-series of sinking material you now start to venture into the "transitional tips."

These type of tips start out as one density and transition into another density. They can be extremely useful for particular fishing situations as well as improving cast presentations by creating smoother transitions between head and sink tip.

Airflo FLO tips are designed to give you this smooth transition and helps you to keep your fly in the zone longer. It's a win win!

FLO Tips come in 10 foot and 12 foot configurations. One quarter of the tip on the head side is intermediate material that transitions into the remaining three quarter which is sink tip. The sink tip part comes in four different densities including T-7, T-10, T-14 and T-18. Ten Foot FLO tips are 2.5' intermediate and 7.5' sink tip. Twelve foot FLO tips are 2.5' intermediate and 9.5' sink tip.

Each tip also features color coded head loops for quick identification as well as looped on the business end for easy tippet application.

FLO Tips also come in a Kit including a tip wallet. The ultimate FLO Tip Kit for steelhead setup could be a Kit plus add a 12 foot FLO in T-10 and T-14 and you'd have every tip you could need for any steelhead situation.

Airflo Salmon Steelhead 5 Foot Polyleaders

Airflo Polyleaders in 5 foot can have many uses. They handle well on single hand fly rods. They perform excellent as trout spey leaders. Also very useful for scandi applications.

But on 24lb cores just like the bigger 10 foot models and come in all the same densities including 3 clear models of Floating, Hover and Intermediate.

Air-Lock Biodegradable Strike Indicators - New for 2020

NEW DESIGN

The new biodegradable foam has more benefits beyond keeping our waterways cleaner. The new design out-performs the original plastic design in every way.
  • 30% Lighter: Easier, more efficient casting and delivery.
  • Suspends 25% more weight on the water.
  • Stealth: Neutral-colored post is less visible to fish, and the lighter overall weight lands softer on the water.
  • Sensitivity: Better strike detection.
  • Durability: No more leaks, dents, holes, cracks or pops!
  • Easier to see leader slot when attaching.
  • Hurts 38.6% less when you hit yourself in the back of the head on a forward cast

RIGGING

One thing that has not changed: The most innovative locking mechanism in the world for attaching to your leader.
  • Standard Rigging: Unscrew the locking nut Lay the butt section of your leader in the slot Replace the locking nut and tighten down Note: For smaller diameter leaders, you can remove the rubber washer for a tighter fit. This will not result in a damaged leader
  • 90 Degree Rigging: Remove the locking nut Thread your leader through the locking nut and slide up to the butt section Place leader butt section in the slot on top of the indicator Tighten locking nut down on the post as shown with leader sticking out one side, then out the top

BIODEGRADABLE

We believe in keeping our waterways as clean as possible. We redesigned our popular strike indicators with biodegradable foam so those indicators that end up floating away for any reason will break down over time.
  • Not to be confused with "water soluble:" Air-Lock Biodegradable Strike Indicators will not dissolve or be compromised in any way during normal use.
  • Biodegrading happens when the material is left in the elements: mud, water, mulch, compost, etc. over a long period of time.

Grand Opening Thank You

Thank You Everyone

Over 200 guests came out for our Grand Re-Opening Party of Gorge Fly Shops' New location. So nice to have room for parking, events, casting and just hanging out.

EVERYONE can't wait for next years event and though that has not been decided upon I believe it's unanimous among all that this has to happen annually.

I have to say I don't think anyone of us here at "The Gorge" anticipated the benefit of large events like this to come from moving away from downtown Hood River. The change has brought a new vibe to our fishing community.

The weather was perfect and Mt.Adams in the backdrop just emphasizes the mountain life going on here.

Call it a rebirth, revitalization, or a reunion! Along with this party came a sense of togetherness which I haven't seen for some time in this local fishing community.

We owe it all to you!
Thank you to all the guests who came out and supported us. Also Thank You to all who couldn't make it and yet you shared it, sent your family and your friends. How cool is that!

Thank You to all the Reps. We appreciate your time and your willingness to participate. Your interactions with our customers is invaluable.

Thank You to all the Reps and Manufacturers who donated products for our prize giveaways. Many happy customers won some really great gear.

Thank You to the Deschutes River Alliance and Fly Fishing Collaborative for being on hand to share the good things happening and the long road ahead.

Thank You to Freebridge Brewing and Jola's for the great eats and drinks.

Thank You to our local guides for participating and bringing your boats. Your continued support is much appreciated.

Same Place Next Year!!!
(we'll keep you posted on the date)
Thanks Again from all of us at

Review: Burkheimer 6139-4 and Airflo Delta Spey II 6/7

CF Burkheimer released a new rod in their lineup this year, and it was one that sparked my interest from the get go. I've been a big fan of their rods ever since I first laid eyes on one, and even more so after I first cast one. I recently got to play with a 8139-4; pairing it with mid-belly, scandi, and skagit lines. The big stick was an absolute machine that was just begging for Washington's O.P., Skagit/Sauk, or British Columbia steelhead. However, a lighter-weight version of this rod for select Columbia tributaries would be a total blast! I don't do the graphite speed chase when it comes to my two-hander's and I look for rods with lots of feel and soul, which is exactly what Burkheimer is known for. Kerry makes a ton of different two-handed rod tapers/lengths in 3, 4, and 5-piece rods, so it's easy to find the one that's right up your alley.

So why a 13'9, 6wt? Well, I was out on the Deschutes earlier this summer fishing my 7127-4 Burkie and reaching for a distant seam when I realized I was trying to manage about 50-60+ feet of mono running line attached to a scandi head and tapered leader. It worked, but I found I was wasting a bit of time stripping line. Also, every third cast or so I would have my running line knot up in a guide. Again, wasting more time not swinging my fly in the water. It got to a point where I realized I was fed up with fishing shorter scandi heads on medium to large rivers. A long time ago in a past life during my snowboarding career, I realized how important it was to have a quiver of boards to suit specific needs; I.E. Powder days, park days, early/late season conditions, etc. Much like how you wouldn't use just one golf club for all of your golfing needs.

So what did I do? I grabbed some mid-belly lines and the 12'7 and tried to dial it in. However, I found I was working much harder than I wanted for stripping in less line on the shorter rod. As fate would have it, our Burkheimer rep called to hype up a new rod... a 13'9, 6 weight. I was instantly sold, and rushed to put one on order for an upcoming trip in hopes to have it in time. I lined up my favorite reel- a wide-spool, raised pillar, click and pawl- with a Airflo Delta II 6/7 Mid-Belly. As I patiently waited I tied some favorite patterns and cooked up some new ones. As soon as the rod arrived I went to the local ditch and tested it out. Was it love at first cast? Absolutely. The rod felt more like a 6/7 weight than a true 6 weight to me, and despite being a little longer it was still nice and light in hand. Pairing it with the Delta II Spey line from Airfo was a perfect match! The good news was that I was already fishing my fly at 70 feet with just the head hanging out the rod tip. A few strips and I was already out to 100' with ease.

Snake River, WA: Big water tailored for longer rods and longer lines

Now I'll be honest in that the majority of fish I catch are never 100' out. In reality they're more like 40-50', but there are times when I know I'm missing fish if I can't make the cast needed. So next thing I know I'm on the Snake River, which happens to make the Deschutes River look like a tiny creek. I was just itching to give the rod a proper test drive! I know of some competition spey casters who'd said in good return years they've stuck fish at over 150 feet off the bank on that particular river. My ears perked up at the thought of hitting a fish at that distance. On a big water like that it's important to have plenty of backing as hooking a good B-run that charges for the current can empty a reel quickly.

So did I stick any fish at that distance? Nope. But at least I know I have the right tools to do so. I did find some at closer range and the rod handled them beautifully. Some people will preach the short format head systems, and I certainly find them applicable. However, I also feel the same with longer rods and more traditional lines. If I'm fishing a head system I really do like using mono shooting line for extra distance, although when I have an integrated running line it truly seems as though I have a much better connection and feel for how my fly is swinging. With integrated running lines such as Airflo's Delta Spey II, I can feel all the subtle nuances in the water and it heightens my anglers senses. Was that a leaf that just hit my fly? Or was it a light pluck from a chrome-bright hen who was curious to my offering? I'd better make a couple more casts before stepping down, just to be sure...

If you fish medium to large rivers than I highly recommend a slightly longer two-hander coupled with a mid-belly line. I find myself stripping less, casting further, and swinging my fly longer. That whole part about the more time your fly is spent in the water can really enhance your chances of success. Nevertheless, I'm in love with this new 6wt sword and will indeed keep it in the rod quiver for a long time to come.

Idaho's Clearwater with the 6139-4 and Airflo Delta II 6/7

As always, we are happy to talk fishing anytime. Give us a call if you have any specific questions on local rivers, gear, and tactics, or if you just want some encouragement to get out of the office.

Stillwater Gear Roundup

It is no secret that I love stillwater/lake fishing, both for trout and warmwater species like bass, musky and carp.  I think many fly anglers are intimidated by lakes, or have a bit of a chip on their shoulder about it, but I can tell you it is an absolute hoot, and a totally different challenge than flowing water.

The testing station, complete with wind tunnel

Locked & Loaded
This blog was intended to be the second installment of my lake line review, (please check out last year's Lake Line Shootout here) but as I saw the number of new items I wanted to test I decided to make it an overall stillwater gear overview and review.  I tested most of these items intensively during our annual spring lake extravaganza.  I took new setups and combos out each day to put them to the test.  I also have spent countless days casting in my yard and in the Columbia River to get a better feel for what is truly different about each rod and line and to dial in the best rod/line matches.

Before I get too in depth, here are what have become my go-to favorite stillwater setups for 2017:

Dry Fly Setup:

This setup should be able to handle everything from midge adults/cripples to damselflies and Callibaetis dries.  The rod/line needs to be accurate and make long casts, but most importantly be delicate, as stillwater fish are pretty wary of their surroundings.

Rod: Winston BIIIx 590-4 or Winston Air 590-4

Reel: Tibor Tail Water

Line: Scientific Anglers Sharkwave Ultimate Trout or Rio InTouch Gold WF5

Chironomid Emerger Dry Fly Action!

Why I chose this setup:  Winston rods are known for their dry fly delicacy, and I make no bones about my love for Winston trout rods.  The SA Ultimate Trout is an excellent line.  It shoots like crazy, floats like a cork, and presents a dry fly as light as you could set it on the water with your hands.  The Ultimate Trout and Gold lines are slightly more aggressive than the other SA Trout lines which helps bite through the wind and load the slightly faster BIIIX.

Greg's Top Picks from I-Cast / IFTD 2015

Every year more and more I look forward to IFTD. Yeah we get to preview all the new products but more than that it's a chance to actually spend some quality time with the individuals we spend countless hours on phone calls and emails working together in the common goal of delivering the products we all benefit from. I can promise you this it's still, and hopefully always will be driven by pure passion for the sport much more than just corporate sales figures. Most everyone I meet in this industry is a passionate angler and I believe nothing is ever going to change that!

Kicking off with Fly Rods

Winston - Last year I quoted "There is a way different vibe at the Winston booth and I like it!", I'm happy to report that vibe is alive and growing!

Boron III Plus
Winston BIII Plus
The BIII Plus Comes in Freshwater, Saltwater and The new Jungle configurations and replaces and BIII SX Saltwater Series. Saltwater rods today are so versatile that labeling one salt specific just doesn't completely describe increasing usefulness of these rods. From trout streamers to jungle predators like peacock bass or golden dorado and all salt species in between this new series of rods are built to perform and exceed your expectations. Much lighter than the previous SX and much livelier! The freshwater and saltwater models certainly exceeded my expectations but it was the Jungle model that set off my adrenaline. While casting I could vision myself launching big flies from a boat into the wind and delivering them to the targets were these predators lie! I am certain we will be delivering solid reviews on this new series of rods once we get them in our hands and on the water. Stay Tuned! 2 Freshwater sizes, 6 Saltwater sizes and 3 Jungle Series sizes expected to arrive in September. $855 - $895

Sage - Sage came to the show with more new rods than some rod companies have in there entire lineup. I assure you there is a new Sage rod this year that will spark your interest.

MOD - "The MOD is a Modern Interpretation of a Moderate Action"

Mod Single Hand Trout - In a world where fast action rods seem to be the norm there is an ever increasing craving to get back to roots of days gone by when fly casting was relaxing and rod actions lend themselves to the finesse nature of the sport. Meet the MOD! Built on the Konnetic platform the MOD represents what modern graphite and technology are capable of achieving. You don't grab this rod to take out in the parking lot to impress your friends but instead you take it to your favorite river and enjoy a relaxing day of fishing.
5 models 2-6 weight all 9 foot. Retail $850

Mod Two Hand - The MOD two handed spey model could easily be that rod that writes a new chapter in history. It develops its power with such ease and grace. Basically takes no effort to make great cast with the MOD. Set a good anchor point, swing into a D-loop, pull some underhand and watch your fly reach orbit, It's really that easy. Just two models of the MOD Spey...6130-4 and 7130-4. Retail $1050

Little ONE - Replaces the TXL-F line of spring creek rods. These rods are so light and crisp and the Konnetic Technology provides unparalleled accuracy. 5 sizes: 082-4, 182-4, 282-4, 382-4, 482-4
Retail $850

ONE Trout Spey - You can rest assure I will be doing a full review of this new addition to the Sage ONE family once I've have some time on the water.
Two Sizes: 2109-4 and 3110-4. Retail $1050

BOLT - Ultra Fast Generation 5 Technology. Anglers looking for long distances, fast line speeds and quick recovery will appreciate the BOLT.

PULSE - Replaces the Response. Fast action Graphite III in a full line of single hand, switch and spey models. Fast action but still connected.

G. Loomis adds several additions to the Pro4x family of rods.

Pro4x Lite Presentation - Built on the wildly popular success of the NRX Lite presentation.

Echo continues their tradition of delivering uncompromising rod actions

Hydrogen
Redington Hydrogen - An incredibly good trout rod! Super light weight and a great mod-fast action. This rod really impressed me as an incredible value for an import rod. It casts and looks great. Pair it with the new Redington Zero reel and be a hero! 11 New Trout sizes including three nymph models. Retail $299.95

Chromer

Redington Chromer - Feature custom polymer gripping sections on the top and bottom handles. No trouble gripping mono with these grips! 3 switch rods and 5 spey rods coming in at $399.95

Reels...

Nautilus X-Frame
Nautilus - The new X-Frame is super light and has all the features you know and love From Nautilus including super smooth sealed carbon fiber disc drag, Activseal and Giga Arbor. While most open frame reels appear fragile I can assure that the X-Frame displays a bold look and the X beams provide amazing strength. Lighter than ever with sizes from 3/4 to 8/9 and priced from $275 to $395. Look for it around the new year.

Ross - Lots of good news coming from Ross Reels, The best is yet to come but for the immediate future the two existing imports get a complete make-over. Look for them in November

Left-Glimpse of a future New CLA, Middle-Rapid, Right-Eddy
Ross Rapid - Replaces the aging flyrise with a new large arbor design and enclose reliable rulon disc drag. Sizes 3/4 to 7/8 and prices are $100 - $120

Galvan Grip
Galvan Grip - Galvan Unveils it's newest creation called "Grip". The Grip features a fully sealed version of Galvan's Torque MicroTune drag system known for its silky smooth startup and reliable powerful performance. Hardy - Ultralite series gets an entire makeover. Two new models include a CA DD (Conical Arbor Disc Drag) and a MA DD (Mid-Arbor Disc Drag). Both reels feature a Color coded drag knob for easy reference. Sizes and prices coming soon

Sage Click -
I've always like the Sage click reel and with the redesign it looks better than ever. It's also lighter than ever with even the largest 4/5/6 size still comes in under 2 oz. Besides cosmetic upgrades the new Click has an even larger arbor than before and more open area for palming.
3 sizes from $259 to $299

Fly Lines

Rio Skagit Trout Max
RIO...Too many changes to list...Most of it is current lines going to ConnectCore low stretch core technology. If you have not expereinced ConnectCore do yourself a favor and try it with the next line you buy.

Skagit Trout Max - You will either love this or hate this new skagit head and here is why. It's short! Very Short! I did not like this skagit head at first but when I learned what was positive about it I ended loving it. Two key notes about this head. First is the shorter the rod the better simply meaning everyone out there that has been looking for or creating your own skagits for short switch or single hand rods, look no more, here it is! The second key feature of these short skagits is that they cast more off the tip of the rod than they do with water load. Bottom line is it makes them more versatile in many different situations than the more standard length skagits we're use to.

Single Hand Spey - More and more anglers are discovering the benefits of spey casting even with single hand rods. Armed with spey techniques you can go ahead and make a cast even if you have no backcast room behind you. Finally a line for single hand rods that really gives you the power to make these spey cast and also have a line that performs excellent overhead cast as well. This is a great choice for anglers that have always wanted to learn some spey techniques without having to invest in Specialized rods, reels and lines. Comes in #4 thru #8 weight sizes and retails for $84.95

Scientific Anglers

S/A...Just like RIO too many changes to list...I'll hit some highlights!

S/A Mastery Series news - The big news in this series is S/A has gone back to their roots and revised the lines that we all have come to know and love. Like the GPX, Expert Distance and the Bonefish taper, the very lines that has set so many standards in the industry! S/A did a re-evaluation on the mastery series and applied modern line technology to these long time favorites. We asked for it and S/A delivered...Thank you Scientific Anglers

Titan Line additions - If you casts streamers or bass bugs from foot or boat with single hand power rods than S/A's Titan series of lines might just become your new favorite. While they are a short shooting head the Titan incorporates a longer rear taper that can help in two ways. One, no need to strip all the way back to the fly line head to recast and two, better line stability on false casting. I guess you could also include better mend-ability. Titan started out as a freshwater floating line in the textured line category. Due to the overwhelming success of this taper S/A has decided to expand into clear tips, sinking tips, saltwater versions, big water tapers and even a smooth original version for those not interested in a textured line. Look for my post in the near future were I will break down the entire series of these awesome lines.

Airflo Bandit
Airflo
Bandit - Australia / New Zealand line. You asked for it and here it is! The bandit is an ultra stealthy line with the first 12' broken up with two tone bands. It also features a long rear taper for line stability on long casts. 4-8 wt...$79.95

Skagit Compact G2 (Generation 2)
Since introduction in 2007 there has never been a need to improve upon the skagit head that still defines what we know as skagit today.
Supple changes are what the new G2 is all about. Leading the way is Super-DRI Technology.

With Super-DRI the G2 now floats higher than ever which helps tracking and improves mending. Slightly shorter overall and slightly increased rear taper requires less energy to cast, produces tight precise loops and is more stable in flight. Utilizing Zone Technology, the back of the head is more buoyant for better tracking and improved mending capability meanwhile the tip features increased density to help drive the cast on layout.
Look for it in September 2015

My pick for this years best of the best!

Tough decision...And the Winner is...In my opinion everything I put in this article is a winner! That's why it's in the article. But if you must know here is three of my immediate favorites!

Seeing that so much of my summer fishing is predator fishing I can't wait to get the New Winston Boron III Plus Jungle rod in my hands. It really felt great casting it on the pond. I can't wait to throw some big bugs on it and tame some predators.

Equally I'm just as excited to get back to swinging streamers for trout! I am really looking forward to the new Sage Little One Trout Spey and see how it compares to the Winston Boron III Microspey. That will be a great showdown!

Going along with two hand trout swinging is the new OPST Commando head and RIO's Trout Max Shooting head. In my limited experience with these new lines thus far I really believe we are looking at the next Skagit Revolution!
