Airflo Shooting Head Bag Best Seller

A small piece of excitement I've come to enjoy with working in this fly fishing industry is when I get to see a product hit a home run. Very few ever do and even fewer are ever predicted to accomplish that "out of the ball park" kind of thrill.

We could add together all sales of all other head wallet / bag offerings and still not come close to the total sales of the Airflo Shooting Head Bag

Why so popular? We're not quite sure. Maybe it's the simple design. Maybe it's the fresh off your grandma's sewing machine look. Maybe because it's Airflo.

The neat feature of this head bag is it can be a slim or stuffed as you want it. You can add pages for more heads, tips, etc.

Covid Retreat

When I bought this camper back in December Covid was hardly even heard of. Little did I know that my idea of some "local to home" camping would turn into my mobile hotel.

While it has not yet been officially named some suggestions have been "Son in Law Suite" or "The Dog House."

Our dog, Rio, much prefers it over a hotel room. All I have to do is say let's go camping and he heads for the trailer.

Columbia Gorge Fishing Report 7.27.2020

Trout

Deschutes River:

The lower Deschutes continues to fish well early and late in the day due to the hot weather we are seeing in the canyon. Best times to throw dries are early in the morning and the last few hours of daylight. Caddis are the main topic of discussion for the surface game. There are strong caddis hatches most everyday but this doesn’t mean that fish are feeding on them on top at all times during the hatch. Fishing a caddis pupa deep or swinging small caddis soft hackles during a caddis hatch can be lights out if they aren’t totally keyed on top.

Contrary to my last fishing report, I brought the trout spey stick with me on my last outing, and the streamer bite was great. I got quite a few nice trout to eat the streamer on the swing which was awesome to see this time of year. Fishing back eddies in the evening is a great way to find some nicer trout sipping small caddis or mayflies like PMD’s right before dark.

Lake Fishing:

Lake fishing around Mt Hood in the summer can sometimes be a struggle to find some open water away from the crowds of people on inner tubes or kayaks but the fishing remains strong up there. The Hex hatch is winding down, though there are still a few bugs around and fish that will still eat a Hex dry or cripple. Fishing sub surface will be your most productive method on the lakes now. Trolling or slow stripping small balanced leeches or wooly buggers with a small bead head nymph trailing 20 inches behind is one of my most productive lake methods in terms of numbers.

Using a full intermediate lake line like the RIO Camolux fly line will help your flies sink down into the zone where the fish are. For stillwater nymphing, using a regular floating line works great, and running two nymphs separated by 20 inches of fluorocarbon tippet is a good way to go. Ice cream cone chironomids in red and black are highly effective patterns to use when fishing under a strike indicator.

Summer Steelhead

Deschutes River:

The lower sections of the Deschutes continue to reward the anglers who are persistent and putting in the time and effort to find a steelhead. While steelhead are by no means easy to catch on a fly, they are a fish that will show themselves and reward the angler who puts in the time and hard work needed to hook one.
Being up at the crack of dawn and standing in the run swinging your fly, bushwacking through miles and miles of river, switching up your shooting heads, tips and flies, etc etc, are all necessary steps to finding success on these early summer steelhead. The fish generally shoot up the Deschutes pretty fast from the mouth as the water temps are pretty warm down there and get cooler the higher up you go. Keep an eye on the temps and try to stop fishing when the water temps are closing in on 70 Fahrenheit. Playing a steelhead in this warm of water is often fatal to the fish. It may swim off and seem like it is fine, but will likely go belly up later on. Fishpond makes a cool little river thermometer that can quickly take an accurate reading of the temps or you can look online to see what they are. Looks like it’s going to be another hot week with temps hitting the 100’s.

Hood River:

The Hood River has been pretty colored up recently with this warm water making it tough to fish. The Hood comes right off Mt Hood so when it gets super hot, it gets very colored up making it unfishable at times. When color is off, fish bigger and darker flies, something the fish can see. There are quite a few steelhead in the whole Columbia system so there are likely some in the lower sections of the Hood.

There is decent trout fishing in the Hood but most people aren’t targeting them in the mainstem. The east and west fork of the Hood offer some cool small stream trout fishing with pretty good access up by Parkdale. Fish aren’t too selective up there and can be caught on basic dry dropper rigs in the pools and pocket water.

Smallmouth Bass/Carp

Smallmouth fishing has continued to be consistent since the last report. Finding areas with some depth and rocky structure is important. Carp fishing is good as usual as long as the sun’s high to make spotting fish easier.

Big, River Smallmouth

Big Smallmouth in rivers are pretty rare. River life is a harsh environment to grow fish over 20". This Susquehanna River Smallie measured 22".

I spotted her behind a giant carp on the flats, a common occurrence in the summer months. It's the ultimate match of angler and fish. Clear water requires the utmost in stealth. One wrong move and you can wave goodbye.

The cast is everything. Cast too close will blow your chance. Cast too far away and you won't get her attention. What the sweet spot is can change daily. Got to keep your calm!

I have a healthy list of Smallmouth over 20" but it's a short list of Smallies over 22". This one will not be forgotten and it lives to fight another day.

Columbia Gorge Fishing Report - 7.19.2020

Nice Deschutes fish on an Intruder

Trout

Deschutes River:

Trout fishing remains strong this week. Lots of hot weather in the forecast, so fishing early in the morning until about 2pm and then the last couple hours of daylight will yield the best results for trout. Nymphing with rubber legs, red lightning bugs, red copper johns, soft hackle pheasant tail nymphs, jigged CDC pheasant tail nymphs and guides choice hare’s ear nymphs are all good bets right now. Look to fish the highly oxygenated areas like riffles and deeper runs. Decent caddis and pale morning dun hatches throughout the day so have some dries ready to go. A #16 tan x caddis is money! Streamer fishing is slow. The trout have plenty of other insects to feed on throughout the day so they seem to ignore the big meals in the heat of the summer.

Lake Fishing:

Lakes have been good. The Hex hatch on Lost Lake is happening now and the fish are definitely keyed on them throughout most of the day. Typical lake methods of either fishing an indicator with some nymphs or fishing a full intermediate sinking line and a balanced leech or wooly bugger on the strip are productive methods right now as well. Trailing a small beadhead prince or pheasant tail nymph behind a larger leech is a good option as the fish see the big profile fly then take the smaller offering behind it.

Summer Steelhead

Deschutes River:

The Dalles Dam counts are looking promising and we have been seeing a few fish around on the lower Deschutes recently. Not a ton of fish in the system yet, but the ones that are in there are chrome bright wild fish that are biters. Covering water is the key still to these early July fish as they are somewhat spread out. Fishing dry lines with floating or intermediate polyleaders and hairwings or skaters is best early mornings and evenings when the sun is off the water. Fishing a T-11 sink tip with a marabou tube fly or intruder is productive at any time of day and will yield some aggressive grabs. Keep a close eye on water temps, when they hit 69-70 degrees Farenheight, quit fishing and give the fish a rest. Early mornings are your best shot throughout the rest of July and all of August when it’s hot, with temperatures hovering around 62-63 and will slowly rise throughout the day as air temps increase.

Hood River:

There are some summers around on the Hood. Not plentiful, similar to Deschutes, so moving around and fishing a lot of water is key. Less visibility than the Deschutes so darker and bigger profile flies are good with sink tips. Nymphing for steelhead with an egg sucking stonefly nymph or bead under an indicator can also catch fish.

Smallmouth Bass/Carp

Smallmouth fishing has continued to be consistent since the last report. Finding areas with some depth and rocky structure is important. Carp fishing is good as usual as long as the sun’s high to make spotting fish easier.

Wading Gear and Accessories

Waders and boots are primary fly fishing equipment. Many items go along with this equipment to make up wading accessories. So many items that we made a special category for them simply known as Wading Accessories.

You will find...

A Wading Belt comes standard with a new pair of waders. Depending on wader model some are pretty nice and some are nothing more than a thin ballistic nylon belt. A belt should be worn while wading not only for fit but a belt can also keep out the water if an unintended dunk occurs.

Many options for belts today

Simms Neoprene wading belt is solid and has just enough stretch to maintain all day comfort. Simms BackSaver Belt provides additional lower back support for those long days on the water. Simms Back Magic Belt provides ultimate back support.
Fishpond Westbank Wading belt features a net slot on the back side. Fishpond also provides the Switchback wading belt pack system that combines a pack and shoulder harness to a wading belt creating a complete fishing system.

Wading Staffs

Once you get use to a wading staff it's hard to be without one! Besides the extra help they provide navigating a slippery river staffs also let you feel your way through unknown underwater terrain.  They also help keep your balance for the long hike home. Currently Simms owns the market with the Standard and a Pro model. Standard is an aluminum model while the Pro is a lighter carbon fiber model.

Traction

Boot Studs and other traction devices certainly falls into the wading accessory category. Simms has many options both specific for their boots while some like the Hard Bite Studs can have some universal use.

Socks

Wading socks come in all forms from standard crews to wet wading guard socks. Simms wading socks are merino wool and come in different weights for different seasons. Simms also has a Bugstopper model and a wet wading model designed specifically for the appropriate times.

Neoprene socks and neoprene guard socks are specific for wet wading applications. I am a huge fan of the Neoprene Guard Socks for summertime wet wading activities. With Guard socks you get to use your regular wading boots for support and traction while the Guard Socks keeps your feet cool and comfortable.

Korkers also provides Neoprene Wading and Neoprene Guard Socks of which we have tested and approve.

Wading Bags

To travel or store all this gear a designated wading bag is indispensable. Two bags that take you to river and back home again in a simple, multi-purpose design are the Simms Taco Bag and Fishpond Burrito Bag. Both of these bags are intended to be a wader changing mat perfect for parking lot gear up and when the day is done they simply wrap around your wet waders and boots for the ride home.

Bags designed for the long haul currently include the Korkers Mack's Canyon and the Fishpond Cimarron Duffel. Both of these bags are built to be airline tough and provide separate wet dry compartments because we all know that we will fish up to the last minute before departure and our boots will not have a minute to dry before take off.

Miscellaneous

Then there are some many more items that might help or save a day of wading such as Replacement Boot Laces, Waterproof Wader Pouches, or stream-side Repair Kits.

Drop us your comments and tell us what's in your wader bag that you won't go fishing without.

Galvan Torque includes a Free Fly Line

A lot of great fly reels come and go while few seem to stick around for a long time. One such reel that is making a heritage for itself is the Galvan Torque.

I'm pretty sure Galvan Torque was around when I entered the fly fishing industry workforce which is coming up on thirteen years now. In a time when so much gear seems to come and go quicker than a drake hatch it's refreshing to know a few products can still stand the test of time and build a solid reputation.

Torque really nails it in the several ways. Lightweight ported design is not only aesthetically pleasing but provides a rigid, enduring frame. The drag knob is easy to adjust and the carbon fiber drag is smooth as silk.

One feature I really like is how many sizes are made. This let's me really dial in a reel for a specific purpose. Such as; I can choose a T-6 for a 7 weight Freshwater rod that I don't need much backing for or I can choose a T-9 for an 8 weight saltwater flats rod for more backing and higher retrieve rate yet still have a reel that falls in under 8 ounce.

Check out the size specs
ModelLineCapacityWeightDiameter
T-32/3WF3+(50 yards)4.2 oz.3.0"
T-44/5WF4+(100 yards)4.5 oz.3.25"
T-55/6WF5+(125 yards)4.8 oz.3.5"
T-66/7WF6+(150 yards)5.2 oz.3.75"
T-77WF7+(150 yards)6.3 oz.3.875"
T-88WF8+(200 yards)7.6 oz.4.0"
T-99WF9+(200 yards)7.9 oz.4.125"
T-1010WF10+(250yds/30#)8.2 oz.4.25"
T-1212WF12+(300yds/30#)8.6 oz.4.50"

I also like the no extra charge, standard color choices. They are black, blue, orange, green and clear.

If you need more convincing of what a great reel Galvan produces just read the perfect list of real five star reviews on our ecomm store.

What's Going on with Airflo?

The Big News...

Airflo Sold to an American Company called The Mayfly Group. You might be familiar with them as the parent company of Ross and Abel Fly Reels.

A little History...

Airflo is, or was, a UK company. Airflo Fly Lines are made in the UK. Tim Rajeff of Rajeff Sports, (Echo Fly Rods and Air-Lock Strike Indicators), was the sole USA Distributor for Airflo Fly Lines.

Earlier this year Airflo sold to The Mayfly Group. Shortly after the sale it was announced that Rajeff Sports would no longer be the USA Distributor as of August 1st, 2020.

So what's this mean for Airflo fans?

The short term answer is BACKORDERS! Yes, you guessed it, Right now we are in endless backorders and the end of that is no where in sight. Even if you ask when will your line be available, we simply don't have an answer.

We, Gorge Fly Shop, did what we could to secure as much stock as possible, especially in the "spey" realm but with that said we are running into alot of "No stock, No ETA" conditions.

While we have a bunch of holes in our inventory we still do have alot of Airflo fly and spey lines in stock. Your best option is to give us a call to inquire about the line you want. If we have it great and if we don't we can recommend you an alternative line choice until Airflo fly lines are back up in stock.

When will that be?

Your guess is as good as ours. Currently I would tell you to not wait for your Airflo Fly Line that you have big plans for on an upcoming trip. Again, we have no idea when stock will start to show up at our door.

What is Gorge Fly Shop future with Airflo

As we roll forward Gorge Fly Shop absolutely plans on remaining an Airflo Fly Line dealer and rest assure we will have orders in place to rebuild our inventory asap!

While Gorge Fly Shop is a full service Fly Fishing Retailer we have long been committed to being experts in fly lines along with a broad inventory and knowledge to make that happen.

For now please be patient on backorders and call or email us with your Airflo list. We have fly lines.
