Air-Lock Biodegradable Strike Indicators - New for 2020

NEW DESIGN

The new biodegradable foam has more benefits beyond keeping our waterways cleaner. The new design out-performs the original plastic design in every way.
  • 30% Lighter: Easier, more efficient casting and delivery.
  • Suspends 25% more weight on the water.
  • Stealth: Neutral-colored post is less visible to fish, and the lighter overall weight lands softer on the water.
  • Sensitivity: Better strike detection.
  • Durability: No more leaks, dents, holes, cracks or pops!
  • Easier to see leader slot when attaching.
  • Hurts 38.6% less when you hit yourself in the back of the head on a forward cast

RIGGING

One thing that has not changed: The most innovative locking mechanism in the world for attaching to your leader.
  • Standard Rigging: Unscrew the locking nut Lay the butt section of your leader in the slot Replace the locking nut and tighten down Note: For smaller diameter leaders, you can remove the rubber washer for a tighter fit. This will not result in a damaged leader
  • 90 Degree Rigging: Remove the locking nut Thread your leader through the locking nut and slide up to the butt section Place leader butt section in the slot on top of the indicator Tighten locking nut down on the post as shown with leader sticking out one side, then out the top

BIODEGRADABLE

We believe in keeping our waterways as clean as possible. We redesigned our popular strike indicators with biodegradable foam so those indicators that end up floating away for any reason will break down over time.
  • Not to be confused with "water soluble:" Air-Lock Biodegradable Strike Indicators will not dissolve or be compromised in any way during normal use.
  • Biodegrading happens when the material is left in the elements: mud, water, mulch, compost, etc. over a long period of time.

  • Backing: 250 yards of Hatch Backing - FREE
  • Line: RIO DirectCore Permit WF9F - FREE
Ankle-deep bonefish flats to bait balls in bluewater, the MAVERICK has been designed from the ground up with Konnetic Technology to be fine-tuned to the demanding needs of saltwater specific applications. Tailored for quick-shots and hearty fights, it's the perfect tool for any angler stepping into the saltwater arena where speed is of the utmost importance.
Saltwater angling is more often a game of quick shots than long casts. Dropping a fly in front of a cruising tarpon 20ft off the bow can be the difference between success and failure during a day on the flats. In fact, most saltwater fisheries put a premium on getting the fly to the target quickly. Redfish meandering about Louisiana marshes, bonefish cruising marl-covered flats, and stripers slashing at bait all require a quick cast into "the zone" for high odds at a hookup. The quicker you can lay the fly down, the better the results. Sage's new MAVERICK has been designed to maximize these quick-shot opportunities with a powerful tip section that drives the casting load down to more robust lower sections, making it easier to fire these quick efficient casts and helping the angler make the most of their finite opportunities. With a true saltwater specific backbone and design, the MAVERICK is ready for any salty challenge thrown its way.

BENEFITS
  • Quick-Shot Presentations
  • Increased Pulling And Lifting Power
  • Oversized Guide-Set To Help Reduce Tangles Of Larger Saltwater Knots

Columbia Gorge Fishing Reports - 1-28-2020

Burkheimers "In Stock"

Trout: Deschutes

We are still in full on winter trout fishing mode on the Deschutes. Still very consistent this winter, only the last few days has the river came up much at all. Overall the river has ran fairly clear with the rain the last few days. If you get there and there is a color to the water and you are struggling, just put on a San Juan Worm or small egg pattern and hang one. Also be sure to move around.

Remember the Deschutes has some great winter fly fishing. One great thing is there is no need to get up early, the best fishing is between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. From here on out the crowds will be low, leaving lots of great water for the rest of us.

There have been the usual good Blue Winged Olive hatches on the cloudy cooler days. Keep in mind that the colder and nastier the day the more concentrated the BWO hatch is. So stock up on Blue Winged Olive nymphs, dries and emergers.

My favorite flies are: Dries: Sparkle Flag BWO #18-20, Extended Body BWO #20, Parachute Extended Body BWO #20, Parachute Adams #18-20 Emergers: Sprout BWO #18-20, Challenged PT #18 Nymphs: Bead Head Flashback PT #18-20, Pheasant Tail #18-20, Flashback Pheasant Tail #18-20, WD40 #18-20

You will also see very productive fishing with a variety of midge patterns. I prefer Zebra Midges Black, Brown, Tan #20

When nymphing I prefer drop all of my smaller flies below a bigger heavier nymph. Here are my favorite larger nymphs: TJ Hooker #8-10, Jigged PT #14-16, Jigger PT Purple #16, Bead Head PT #12-16. Many others work, but those are my favorites.

Colored water flies: San Juan Worm Red, Wine, Purple #10. Small Egg patterns Pink & Orange

For those that want to swing some streamers, streamer fishing will slow down a little during the winter, but you can still get them on Streamers. The key is fish your streamers slower than you do the rest of the year and keep moving.
Here are my favorites streamers: Rio Precious Metal, Kiwi Muddler, Sculpzila #8 (White, Olive/White, Natural) and Beaded Wooly Buggers #8 variety of colors.
Trout Flies

Lakes:

We are fairly limited on the lakes that you can fish this time of year due to snow in the high country and the lakes being frozen. The most accessible lakes in the winter are down near the Columbia. Taylor Lake on the Oregon side. Roland Lake and Spear Fish Lake on the Washington side.

The best thing about fishing lakes this time of year is that the best fishing is mid day. No need to get up early.

Best results have been fishing an intermediate or slow sinking line with a variety of #8-10 leach patters in Black or Brown. Suspending a Balance Leach or Chironomids under an indicator with a floating works well to. The biggest thing in the winter is fish your flies very slow.
Stillwater Trout Selection

Other Great Winter Trout Fisheries:

Here are some other great winter trout fisheries across Oregon and Washington to think about. Oregon: Crooked River, Donner Blitzen River, Malhuer River and Owyhee River. Washington: Rocky Ford Creek and Yakima River All of these are great fishing during the winter and can be fun to go explore.

Steelhead:

The Northwest has seen a good amount of rain over the last few weeks and steelhead are moving into the rivers. Most of them are a little high right now, but once they settle in fishing should be good. Best fishing should be on the North Coast Rivers, Sandy River, Kalama River, Hood River and Clackamas.
Steelhead Flies

Smallmouth:

Water temps have cooled to the point that smallmouth are not very active now and won’t be until spring.

OPST Pure Skagit 8116-4 Spey Rod Review

OPST Pure Skagit
Short speys have been gaining in popularity over the last couple of years and today most serious fly rod manufacturers have offerings. The new popularity is certainly due to all of the short Skagit and Scandi lines on the market today. I feel confident saying today’s short speys are the easiest two-handed rods to cast for both beginners and experts alike. Along with being easy to cast, short speys are easy to fish, opening up tight spots previously thought impossible to fish with a 13’ rod.

One of the best-known manufacturers of short Skagit lines is OPST; they also offer running lines, sink tips and even hooks. OPST now offers a full line of micro speys and short speys. I got to demo the OPST Skagit Pure 8116, it’s an 8 weight 11’6” in length. I spent a few hours casting this rod and honestly, I liked it a lot but it is not an eight weight unless you want to put it in a line up with single-handers. In an honest line up with like two-handers this is a 6 maybe even 6.5 weight. The OPST Skagit Pure is somewhere between the IMX Pro 6111 and the 7111 (two very popular short speys).

Casting the Skagit Pure was a blast. I fished Airflo Skagit Scout 420, 450, and 480 grains with both T11 & T14 in 10’ lengths. Believe it or not this rod has a huge grain window and had no issues with any of these heads or sink tips. The tip on this rod is stiff enough to lift a 480 grain head and T14 with no problems whatsoever. I found this rod pretty snappy and had no problem casting 60’ of running line.

The Skagit Pure is good looking; it’s matte black with some blue highlights. The grips are full well on this model and the reel seat is uplocking. I paired the rod with a Hatch 7 Plus and it felt perfect.

Line combos on this rod:

420 gr Scout w/T11 or T14. This was my favorite line set up but I’m really splitting hairs here. The 420 generated higher line speed and tighter loops but you definitely lose some of the feel you get with the heavier heads. For me, I like casting pretty hard so I liked this a lot.

450 gr Scout w/T11 or T14. I started with this line as a lucky guess and I almost stopped here - it’s that good. No issues picking up or casting, and you can feel all the goodness coming out of this rod. This is the right line for most anglers.

480 gr Scout w/T11, money. If you like to load a rod way up and go a little slower this is a good set up. T14 will go but it’s a bit too much.

I had limited time with this rod so I only tried Airflo Skagit Scouts, OPST line recommendations for  Commando heads can be found here. I’m 100% positive the 8116 Skagit Pure will bomb with a short Scandi line (SA Scandi Lite), 390 grains is probably right in the sweet spot with this rod for most folks. Go 30 grains any direction to line it heavy or light. Like I said, I really like this rod and it was a blast to cast. I highly recommend it!

New for 2020 - OPST Pure Skagit Series Two Handed Rods

Designed By Skagit Legend Ed Ward

These rods represent decades of dedication purely to sustained-anchor two-handed casting. A rod reflecting its designer and a true illustration of Ed’s vision.

Olympic Peninsula Skagit Tactics is proud to release our very own line of Micro Skagit and Pure Skagit Two-Handed Rods, designed by Ed Ward. We developed our rods over five years during which we refined the taper to represent Ed’s concepts. It will initially include six rods in total, ranging from a 9’9” Micro Skagit Two-Handed 3wt up to a 11’6” 8wt, and every whole rod weight in-between.

This line-up will be classified by design differences, into two categories:
  • Micro Skagit - 399-4, 4100-4, 5104-4
  • Pure Skagit - 6108-4, 7110-4, 8116-4, 9123-4

OPST Pure Skagit

The Pure Skagit Rod line-up is definitively more focused towards Spey/Skagit-type two-handed casting.

Represented by a 10’8” 6wt, an 11’ 7wt, an 11’6’ 8wt, they depart from our Micro Series in a few ways. The upper grips are double-welled and thus more aligned with contemporary two-handed rods under 12’, while the lower handles remain switch-style.

These rods are also faster than the Micro series, being a true medium-fast action that casts off the upper third of the taper. This taper loads very well during the Sweep phase of the Skagit casting sequence and maintaining that load into the Forward Cast, with a very crisp final delivery.

This rod line-up is targeted toward the fishing of large trout up to Canadian and Alaskan King Salmon.  Rod color is Matte Black with Blue Accent Wraps
