Columbia Gorge Fishing Reports - 4-30-2022

Korkers River Ops BOA - In Stock

Trout - Deschutes River:

Lower Deschutes River

The Lower Deschutes has been fishing fair to good since the opener last week. There are thousands of little 8 inch steelhead smolts in the river right now that can be tough to keep off your flies. Fishing faster and deeper water is where you’ll find more redsides than smolts. Fish should be fully keyed on stonefly nymphs right as they begin to migrate towards the shore to hatch in a few weeks. Double or single rubber leg setups will produce a lot of eat over the course of the next few weeks. It is going to take some warm weather in the forecast to get the hatch started so keep an eye on the weather report. Swinging small streamers has been good too if you are tired of staring at an indicator all day. Shouldn’t be too much longer before we start to see the big bugs crawling onto shore! The hatch will start down by the mouth and gradually progress its way upstream toward Maupin and Warm Springs. Foam body Chubby Chernobyl’s in the heavier riffles and Norm Wood Special type hairwing flies in the glassy water under trees is a good approach when it comes to fly selection.

Middle Deschutes River

Similar report as the Lower right now. The middle D is a good option and fish are keyed on big stonefly nymphs. The hatch will generally start around the same time as the Lower on this section of river. Double nymph rigs or streamer fishing is a good way to get the attention of some nice brown trout.

Metolius River

The Met is a great option in the spring. Trout fishing is good on euro rigs as well as indicator rigs. One of my favorite two fly setups on this river are a mega prince up top followed by a zebra midge below. I’ve noticed the trout don’t really start eating until mid to late morning so no need to get their at the crack of dawn. Pale morning duns are the main bug hatching in the afternoons right now. Green drakes are just around the corner so get ready for some hot dry fly action. Bull trout are eating stripped and dead drifted streamers good. Stripping flies around log jams and structure will get some big takes. If you can spot them holding in tailouts, try dead drifting a small sculpin under an indicator. It’s a presentation those fish don’t see a lot of and is deadly.

Mount Hood Lakes:

Lawrence Lake Update.
Lawrence Lake opened on Friday April 22. The current situation is with snow and road culvert repair needed the access is gated at the Middle Fork settling pond. This is about 2.5 miles before Lawrence lake. The spring stocking of Lawrence has been postponed until access allows.

Smallmouth Bass / Carp:

Smally fishing was good over the weekend. I talked to a friend who had a banner day on Saturday fishing back sloughs with some depth and rocky structure. He was using an intermediate full sink line with some smallish streamer/baitfish patterns on a slow strip and the bass were all over it. Should remain good throughout the next few months.

Columbia Gorge Fishing Reports - 4.25.2022

Metolius Bull Trout

Trout - Deschutes River:

Lower Deschutes River

Today marks the opening day for the upper portion of the Lower Deschutes River (warm springs, mecca flats, trout creek). Fishing should be good this weekend up there. Fish should be keyed on big black and brown stonefly nymphs hard for the next few weeks before they start to crawl up onto shore and hatch.

A big Chubby Chernobyl with a rubber legs dropper is a good setup now if you don’t want to stare at a bobber all day with the outside chance of getting an early chubby eat. Still a few weeks out and a couple hot days for the hatch to really take off.

Swinging small streamers on a 3-4 weight trout spey rod is a super addicting way of targeting Deschutes redsides and is a favorite among Gorge Fly Shop staff.

Middle Deschutes River

The Middle Deschutes has been fishing pretty good and will only continue to get better as we move closer to May. Just like the Lower, fish in this section will be keyed in on stonefly nymphs and small streamers on the swing or stripped.

Metolius River

The Metolius has been fishing really well this spring for both rainbows and the native bull trout. Lots of good bug activity and fish starting to consistently look up.

Pale morning duns were the main mayfly I have been consistently seeing down there but pretty soon here, the famed Green Drake hatch will get started which is an exciting time to be on the Metolius River.

Good fishing can be found from Allingham Bridge all the way down to Lower Bridge 99 as well as below down towards Lake Billy Chinook. The river upstream of Allingham to the headwaters remains closed until May 22nd.

Euro and traditional nymph rigs are productive methods right now for trout. Bull trout have been eating both big streamers and nymphs pretty well the past few weeks.

For streamer fishing, the bigger the better. I use streamers that most would think is a joke. 8-10 inch streamers with good action. I like black, white and olive. They are eating dead drifting streamers and stonefly nymphs good right now too.

Columbia Gorge Fishing Reports - 4.2.2022

Trout - Deschutes River:

Lower Deschutes River

The Lower Deschutes around the Maupin area has been fishing pretty good as of late. The Deschutes is currently still closed up at Warm Springs, Mecca Flats and Trout Creek for another few weeks. The 2022 opener is right around the corner and should be fantastic fishing as those fish haven’t seen any artificial flies in months. There are some decent blue wing olive hatches going on right now around the Maupin area, and the March Brown mayflies should be making an appearance throughout the rest of this month, particularly on cloudier days. Standard euro nymph and traditional indicator rigs are getting it done. Deschutes redsides will start to really key in on salmon and golden stonefly nymphs right now leading up to the big hatch next month. Don’t be afraid to run big flies, #4 and #6 rubber legs in black and brown will be a great fly choice for the next month.

Middle Deschutes River

The middle D is fishing okay right now. Water temps are still fairly cold up there but the fish are there and will eat a well presented nymph or streamer. There are plenty of good access points to fish this section of the river around Redmond and even lower as it heads towards Lake Billy Chinook. Standard double nymph rigs are working as well as swinging or stripping small sculpin streamers. The fishing should really start to pick up as we get closer to May.

Metolius River

The mighty Met has been producing good results recently for me. And by good results, I mean a few good fish a day. This is one of the most challenging rivers to fish anywhere, the water is crystal clear and fish are smart and won’t be fooled easily. Euro nymphing or indicator nymphing are going to be your most productive methods right now. I like running a larger golden stonefly nymph or mega prince nymph, followed by a small mayfly or caddis imitation. 2 bit hookers, skinny nelsons, ju ju baetis, or zebra midges all make for good droppers. The famous green drake hatch is around the corner and is an excellent time to fish the Metolius as it’s nearly the only time all year where the trout get a little stupid. Some of the biggest rainbows are caught during this hatch.

The bull trout fishing has been solid. Stripping large black, olive, or white streamers around log jams and undercut banks will yield the best results. Nymphing is also productive for bulls. I use a large size #4 rubber legs when I nymph for them but they’ll eat just about any nymph you would use for rainbow fishing. 7 and 8 weight rods with heavy tippet are necessary as your chance of hooking a 15 lb fish are pretty good if you know where to find them.

Mount Hood Lakes:

Going to be awhile before we see any mountain lake action. Stay tuned...

Steelhead -

Smallmouth Bass / Carp:

Pre spawn fishing is beginning to happen right now in the Columbia River Gorge. Water is still a little cold, so focus on slowing your presentation down to allow them to eat it. Slow stripping streamers, baitfish, and crayfish patterns is producing the best results. Look for back eddies and side sloughs as well as certain shallow flats on the main river. Plenty of access all up and down the Gorge off of I-84.
