Machined from 6061 aluminum the frame features a full cage housing to keep those thin shooting lines in check. It's finished off with a solid back and stealthy Gunmetal Grey color.

Wait a minute! Wasn't there already a 1939 Bougle Heritage? Yes, but...it was only in a limited run with limited sizes. Must have been pretty popular, enough for Hardy to let go of the past model in favor of the 1939. Along with this move comes the additions of all sizes of Bougle including Baby Bougle all the way up to a 4" model perfect for spey.

Lamson ARX S-Line Switch and Spey Reels

New for 2019, Waterworks Lamson ARX S-Line

Lots of confusion over this new model compared to the original ARX Reel. It Looks like the same reel in a new finish. Well it mostly is just that. All the size dimensions remained the same and spools will interchange.

Fact is the reel really didn't need to physically change. It already has proven internals and great features for the spey angler.

ARX is a full frame reel. Very good feature for spey especially with nylon monofilament running lines. ARX also features a narrow frame area near bottom side of spool that allows for spool rim palming.

While ARX looks and feels lightweight it actually has some bulk for strength and balance weight.

A feature I really like on all Lamson reels is the machined into spool counterbalance weight. This feature really cleans up a reels look and helps minimize unnecessary, bolt on, parts.

Arx is a purpose-built premium spey and switch reel. Stealth pro­file and full-cage design prevents line from escaping or snagging on the reel. S-Line brings a new orange and champagne color scheme as well as refreshed styling. Manufactured in the U.S.A. and assembled in Boise, Idaho.

Sage Spey Reels - New for 2019

New for 2019 - Sage Spey Reels

One of the coolest new reels to appear at I-CAST is this new specific purpose Spey Reel from Sage. It features classic aesthetics with modern performance.

Starting with the SCS Drag system this new reel features a one revolution, machined, anodized aluminum drag knob, fully detented and numbered for repeatable exact settings.

Large, concave arbor to provide reel rigidity and fast line pickup.

Machined aluminum full frame construction with minimal porting. The full frame features line guards to assure thin running migration does not occur. This reel is purposely made heavy to balance out two hand spey rods.

Easy converts from left to right hand retrieve and includes neoprene and embroidered ballistic nylon reel case.

Comes in two colors: Bronze and Black/Gunmetal. The bronze carries on a traditional old school appearance. Black/Gunmetal has a more modern look but without being too flashy.

Comes in two sizes: 6/7/8 and a 7/8/9. Note these are spey/switch rod sizes. No need to convert from single hand.

Redington Grande Fly Reels

New for 2019 - Redington Grande

Following on the enormous success of the Behemoth, Redington takes reel construction to forward levels by creating a fully sealed, Super-Torque, CNC Machined, Anodized 60612-T6 Aluminum beast of a reel called the Redington Grande.

With sizes from 5 weight to 14+, this reel series clearly is here to tame Grande critters. I can see it mounted on rods such as Predator, Crux and Vice. I could also see it get some spey play in the steelhead and salmon swing game.

One key feature that stood out to me is the Optimized reel foot position. Many times I've notice while casting larger size rods that they tend to twist in hand while casting. On the Grande this problem is addressed by offsetting the reel foot to the true center of gravity.

Just In - Bauer RX Classic Speys

Bauer Reels have been tough to get this last couple years. Since acquired by R.L Winston, demand has them at a premium.

We just received two RX Classics in #6. These make great 7/8 size spey reels. RX Classics are solid and have a good weight for two hand rod balance. Bauer RX Classics also have silky smooth reliable drag systems.

We received an all Black #6 and a Black frame-Charcoal Spool version. Shown are pictures of the actual reels.

Abel Spey and Switch Reel Review

I like good fly gear. Although I often go without and make do with whatever I have and find ways to appreciate not always sound mechanics, because - well I got a good deal on it or someone gave it to me. Working for a fly shop is sometimes hard because of the pain involved with passing up all the goodies that people make and send to our shop. I can’t have it all, after-all – or even a fraction of the gear that comes through the shop. Like most people, I have learned to choose my battles and the bummer is, is that I am not victorious quite often enough when it comes to owning something new and cool. But, I can at the least try to savor the drool instead of resenting it and embrace the mere act of wiping it away from the corner of my mouth.
