Deschutes River Steelhead in all it's glory! What a beautiful fish with the pink stripe, I love it! - Photo Sam Sickles of Steelhead Outfitters
Deschutes Trout: Again, trout are not the main focus on the Deschutes this time of year, but trout fishing has been quite good. Especially those who have been EURO nymph fishing! I've talked with customers who have used the word "Stupid" fishing in the way that it's stupid good! They have also been catching steelhead while targeting trout with the EURO techniques. Caddis are still a great choice, dries, pupa or larva will do well. Don't forget streamer fishing, which is a favorite of ours and it can be productive. You may not catch as many swinging streamers as you would EURO nymph fishing but, the tug is the drug, if you know what I'm saying. Nothing like a solid grab when swinging and twitching a streamer. Fish your trout spey rods here with 10’of T-8 sink tip, or any of the sinking Airflo Polyleaders / RIO Versileaders along with the following flies. Sculpzillia # 8 (Olive, White or Natural), Kiwi Muddler, Precious Metal and Aqua Flies Char-mer . For EURO nymph fishing try balanced leech patterns or tungsten jigged nymphs to get down quick and get the job done.
Lakes:
Most lakes are fishing well, however with the last couple of days being cold and wet, look for possible snow in the higher level lakes. Best results have been fishing an intermediate or slow sinking line with a variety of #8-10 leach patters in Black or Brown. Suspending a Balance Leach under an indicator with a floating line has been lethal to. Dry fly fishing has been good in the mid-morning or in the evening with Parachute Adams #14-16, Tilt Wing Callibaetis #14-16, Black Ants #8-12Stillwater Trout Selection
Steelhead:
Deschutes River: "The White River continues to cycle, but low freezing levels should kill that in the next day or two. That being said fall is upon us, cold nights cool days, low sun angles, which is great for the floating line enthusiasts. This is your time! Larger fall fish are around but in lesser numbers than our summer "A" runs. Despite poor dam counts the Deschutes has fished well down low all summer. Look for good fall fishing, thin crowds, cool days and big fish." - Sam Sickles of Steelhead Outfitters.Guided Fishing Info:

Another Deschutes Steelhead just before releasing.
Klickitat River: According to Travis Wallace of Western Waters Guide Service..."The fishing remains consistent, the river went out for a couple of days but with the colder temps the last couple of nights it is back in shape and fishing well!" Now is a great time of year to fish the Klickitat Steelhead and Salmon are both in the system. The salmon will start to turn from preparing to spawn as we get closer to the middle of October, so you still have a few weeks. Also, you can look forward to a solid Coho season as fish start to show up more in the upper river. A great fly selection - Klickitat Super Slammer Kit

** Side note to the Klickitat, don't be surprised if you hook in to a Chinook when your trying to Steelhead.

Well, that's it for now. Get out there, it's a great time of the year with crowds somewhat getting smaller due to other opportunities for hunting and what not. Before we know it we will be into winter...
