Columbia Gorge Fishing Report - 1.31.2022

Trout - Deschutes River:

The Deschutes should continue to fish very well in the next few weeks. The extended forecast is showing many daily highs in the 50’s. This will bump the water temps a few degrees in the afternoons and should make the trout very happy! The hatches are continuing along without many notable changes. Be prepared with plenty of B.W.O. and midge patterns in all stages of their life cycles. Barring any unforeseen precipitation events, the flows should remain steady with water on the clear side. Don’t be afraid to fish tiny flies. Midge larva and B.W.O. nymphs in 18-20 work extremely well when the water is clear. Keep your eyes peeled for risers in some of the softer water. Dry fly opportunities will be plentiful on the right days!

Mount Hood Lakes:

Going to be awhile before we see any mountain lake action. Stay tuned...

Steelhead -

Finally some decent steelhead news! The fishing has been pretty good so far this winter. We’ve heard positive reports lately from the coast all the way to the eastern side of winter fish territory. It’s been a bit on the dry side lately with many rivers trending toward low and clear. Fortunately there’s some precipitation coming in early this week with most river predictions showing a nice little bump. This should be just the ticket to freshen things up and draw in some new fish. We’re going to have some ideal conditions to swing flies this week, particularly up and down the coast. Consistent 50 degree weather will make the water a fair bit warmer than it could be at this time of year, and that never hurts! Those willing to put in the time have a great chance at being rewarded.

Smallmouth Bass / Carp:

Smallmouth and carp are pretty elusive this time of year.
