Columbia Gorge Fishing Reports - 5.25.2021

Trout - Deschutes River:

The big bug hatch is officially ON!
The stonefly hatch is still going strong in the upper portions of the lower Deschutes. From Trout Creek to Harpham flats, the fish were still eating big dries strong the last week even with cooler and cloudier weather. Focusing your efforts in the jungle water under overhanging trees will produce the best results if you are wanting to fish the hatch. Euro and traditional nymphing tactics work better in the riffles. By now, the fish are beginning to wise up as they have seen quite a few different patterns (especially if fishing around Maupin). Downsizing flies to a size #8 purple chubby or a more natural pattern like a norm woods special will be the ticket. On cloudy days, keep any out for green drakes. These large mayflies will bring some of the largest fish in the Deschutes out of their hiding spots to eat these bugs. If you see seagulls flying around and crashing down by the water, they are most likely eating the drakes, so get one tied on asap! Other bugs to keep on your radar now and moving forward will be pmds, caddis (on hotter days) and yellow sallies (small yellow stonefly).

Smallmouth Bass / Carp:

Smallie fishing remains pretty good. Finding the fish is the toughest part to this fishery it seems and by no means have I got it completely figured out yet. Fishing the backwater areas off the main Columbia is productive. Most of my success has been in 8-12 feet of water around rocky structure fishing intermediate lines and medium size baitfish streamers such as the meat sweats from RIO.
