These rods represent decades of dedication purely to sustained-anchor two-handed casting. A rod reflecting its designer and a true illustration of Ed’s vision. 

Olympic Peninsula Skagit Tactics is proud to release our very own line of Micro Skagit and Pure Skagit Two-Handed Rods, designed by Ed Ward. We developed our rods over five years during which we refined the taper to represent Ed’s concepts. It will initially include six rods in total, ranging from a 9’9” Micro Skagit Two-Handed 3wt up to a 11’6” 8wt, and every whole rod weight in-between.

This line-up will be classified by design differences, into two categories:

• Micro Skagit - 399-4, 4100-4, 5104-4
• Pure Skagit - 6108-4, 7110-4, 8116-4, 9123-4

OPST Pure Skagit

The Pure Skagit Rod line-up is definitively more focused towards Spey/Skagit-type two-handed casting.

Represented by a 10’8” 6wt, an 11’ 7wt, an 11’6’ 8wt, they depart from our Micro Series in a few ways. The upper grips are double-welled and thus more aligned with contemporary two-handed rods under 12’, while the lower handles remain switch-style.

These rods are also faster than the Micro series, being a true medium-fast action that casts off the upper third of the taper. This taper loads very well during the Sweep phase of the Skagit casting sequence and maintaining that load into the Forward Cast, with a very crisp final delivery.

This rod line-up is targeted toward the fishing of large trout up to Canadian and Alaskan King Salmon.  Rod color is Matte Black with Blue Accent Wraps

OPST Micro Skagit

The Micro Skagit category consists of three rods rated to cast 275 grain heads or lower. Their tapers have been designed to pleasantly accommodate both single-handed Spey/Skagit-type casts and two-handed Spey/Skagit-type casts.

Whether you’re picking apart small to medium sized rivers on foot swinging soft hackles, throwing big streamers into the bank from a boat, or busting big bushy salmon flies into the teeth of an afternoon breeze, these nifty little hybrid rods should have a permanent place in your quiver.

The 9’9” 3wt and 10’4wt both have cigar-style single-welled upper grips and switch-style lower handles, while the 10’ 4” 5wt has a grip/handle configuration like the Pure Skagit Rod style outlined in the next section. Rod color is Matte Black with Blue Accent Wraps

Olympic Peninsula Skagit Tactics takes Commando heads to the next level. For many of us trout spey, single hand rod enthusiast, we struggled with the loop to loop head to running line connection. It interferes with our ability to cast short, strip short and haul line on our single handed spey cast.

Not anymore! For 2019 OPST gives us Commando Smooth

Commando Smooth Starts with the famous Commando Head and seamlessly integrates it with thin (0.025") Running / Shooting line.

The result is a Skagit System that gives anglers the freedom to strip, cast short, double haul without the bump of a loop to loop connection between head and running line.

Most applications for Commando Smooth will be Single Hand Skagit tactics, light Switch Rods and Micro Spey, Trout Spey rods.

Finding the right sink tips for these small rod applications has never been easier. OPST gives us Micro Tips in 5 foot, 7.5 foot, and 10 foot configurations. Now we have the ability to fine tune a particular rod to a particular fishing situation. No more cutting and crafting specialized tips.

Generally the 5 foot Micro Tips work great on the smallest single hand rods from 7'6" 3 weights to 8'6" 5 weights. The 7.5 foot Micro Tips are ideal for 8'6" 5 weights to 10' 7 weights. The 10 foot Micro Tips really tune you micro trout spey game in perfectly and are the go to steelhead switch rod tips.

OPST Commando Smooth Integrated Skagits

Since the introduction of the Olympic Peninsula Skagit Tactics Commando Heads, the world of skagit spey casting has forever changed. I've seen a lot of change in the fly fishing industry but I can't recall anything that has been more tactic changing than this. Not only did Commando Heads change Two Hand Skagit Casting but equally has influenced a whole new generation of single hand skagit tactics.

Along with this dramatic influence of Single hand Skagit Tactics came a desire to be free of the "loop". That pesky loop between head and shooting line. It's not a big deal when you fish two hand rods on big water because you spend all your time with head outside your rod tip. But when we took  skagit down to small stream adventures and standard size trout rods we found that darn loop to just get in the way of such things like stripping streamers, hauling line and following fish.

Most of the Fly Fishing industry moves along day to day, year after year following a standardize path of success. Somewhat boring and true! There comes a time when every product starts to look the same and your vision gets blurred. Just when you're about to schedule an eye exam something new comes into focus and you reach a conclusion that a different way of thinking is all you needed to correct your vision.

Two new OPST products got my attention real quick. Pure Skagit Commando Heads and Pure Skagit Lazer Line.

OPST Commando Heads - 

OPST's Commando Heads represent the culmination of decades of innovation in Skagit casting by Ed Ward and Jerry French. Ed and Jerry were at the forefront of the "Skagit Revolution", and they have been refining skagit fishing techniques ever since. These are remarkably efficient, easily casts and enjoyable for the simple reason that they are specifically designed for SAS (Sustained Anchor Systemology). The philosophy behind SAS is simple: The Skagit cast is a water base cast with the rod load coming from the tension between the water surface and the line. As Such a sustained anchor cast where the fly remains stationary until the final power stroke is the most efficient form of casting. Our lines are shorter than traditional skagit lines and perform exceedingly well with a continuous "out and around" casting stroke. There is no pause before the final stroke and the cast is one continuous motion. Pure Skagit lines take beginning casters and make them effective. They take experienced casters to a whole new universe of casting pleasure. Our Commando heads excel on conventional two hand "Spey" rods but are optimized for shorter switch rods from 10 -12 foot.

But where these lines really get interesting is in single hand casting. We have taken two handed casting theory, traditionally associated with steelhead and salmon and applied it to the micro end of the spectrum. Now you can skagit cast and swing flies for everything from sea run cutthroat trout to smallmouth bass to panfish with rods as light as a 3 weight, and as short as 6 foot. The same principals of sustained anchor and water load apply. You can haul or not, back cast or not, roll cast, skagit cast, just about whatever you want to do, these lines will do it and they will fly off your rod tip.
