Sage Payload

Big fish, big fly. While not always the case, this rule does ring true for many warmwater and saltwater fisheries with anglers casting larger flies than ever before. With a powerful but comfortable casting action, the new PAYLOAD series of rods are designed to help anglers cast those heavy lines and big flies more effectively. Whether launching a double-articulated streamer to the far bank with the 689-4 or dredging the Sacramento Delta with the 989-4, anglers will notice how easy it is to hurl a heavy line and big fly with the PAYLOAD.

Featuring a fast action for casting large flies and very powerful tip to help pick up heavy lines off the water, the PAYLOAD is tuned for the extreme. These powerful mid sections then transition to a more forgiving butt that allows for a slower and more relaxed casting stroke that reduces fatigue. This softer butt section also allows for more leverage while fighting fish, making it easier to gain ground on hard fighting species. The slightly shorter lengths offer a more effortless cast through a shorter lever and is better for landing fish out of a boat over a traditional 9' rod.

Scientific Anglers Amplitude Smooth Titan Long - New for 2019

Chucking big flies with powerful fly rods takes a line that can carry articulated critters to their target. Titan is and has been that line in my arsenal for many years now. The qualities of durability, shoot-ability and match-ability keep this line on my A list.

Durability

I still have my original Titan line from like 10 years ago and while it has seen countless hours of use it could still pull duty if called upon. Today's Amplitude Smooth Titan Long is even more durable with it's slick AST Plus coating.

Shoot-ability

This head design just gets get to the target and turns over with ease. Titan help me find confidence in throwing large streamers. The more I believed in it the more it proved that with a solid cast respectable distances where achievable. It's help me to become a better streamer angler. The Amplitude Smooth Titan Long is even better from its extended rear taper for more line control.

Match-ability

Streamer anglers place big demands on rods. The quiver we chose are the heavyweights of the industry with a continuing quest for ever more powerful sticks. Titan Long easily finds it's place among heavyweights. Configured to two sizes heavy, it extracts all the potential from rods such as Sage Method-Igniter, Winston BIII Jungle, Redington Predator, Exocett SS, and Scott Meridian.

I know many anglers today get bent over about the 2 line size bump thing but remember to extract power from these stout sticks you got to get them bent deep and to turn over monster flies you need mass in the fly line head. Titan anglers aren't tying on caddis and Titan is not a trout line!

Survey - How big of fly are you willing to fish?

In recent years I've spent much time experimenting with fly size. Not just for fish response but casting effort as well. What I've found is bigger doesn't always mean harder to cast. Other factors effect casting effort are, weight, wind resistance, and profile.

Like I find weighted clouser minnows fairly easy to cast despite the lead eye weight. It's got to be the slim profile and the fact that deer hair doesn't adsorb water adding additional weight. The original game changer fly was next to impossible to cast but the newer feather game changer version is quite easy to handle.

I've also noticed over the years that the more popular stinger / shank type steelhead patterns focus on creating large silhouettes with minimal materials thus creating a fly that appears bigger without the added bulk to slow down your cast.
