2025 DRA Auction - February 22nd, 2025

DRA Auction 2023
Deschutes River Alliance Auction and Gathering
February 22nd, 2025
The Redd in Portland Oregon
2:00 PM - 5:30 PM

Gorge Fly Shop will have a table there but Travis and Lyndsey will not be able to attend due to a schedule conflict.  The Ducks Unlimited Banquet is the same day which is an annual Duddles Family tradition.

If you have not been to a DRA Auction or Gathering before, it is a fantastic, event.  A gathering of people whose love for the Deschutes runs deep and who really want to be part of making the Deschutes River healthy again.  The food and drinks are great and plentiful in addition to all of the many excellent live, and silent auction items.  It truly is an event you do not want to miss.

Supporting Military and Veterans through Fly Fishing in Wild Places

John Messenger - Founder and President

In a world that often feels chaotic and overwhelming, finding solace in nature can be a powerful antidote. For many active duty military and veterans, the healing power of the great outdoors is especially profound. That's where Veterans Backcountry Adventures comes in, we offer a unique opportunity for current and former special operators to reconnect with nature, themselves, each other and their families.

Founded with the mission of providing therapeutic outdoor experiences for active duty military and veterans, Veterans Backcountry Adventures is a 501(c)(3) non profit that partners with organizations like Gorge Fly Shop to offer unforgettable experiences in some of the most beautiful and remote locations in the country. From fly fishing in pristine rivers to backpacking through rugged wilderness, these trips are designed to not only challenge participants physically, but also to provide a sense of camaraderie and support.

VBA was established to address a specific need within the military and veterans nonprofit sector. Our approach sets us apart from other well-intentioned charities that support service members and veterans in two key ways. Firstly, our trips are entirely organized, conducted, and led by peers. Through our experience, we have recognized that many members desire and benefit from taking control of their own experiences. This empowerment is challenging to achieve in programs where participants feel like passive observers. We have also observed that the group dynamic can be significantly altered when individuals from outside the special operations community, even with good intentions, are involved.

Secondly, we prioritize fostering camaraderie above all else, believing that this approach yields significant benefits. While many programs emphasize mental health as a primary focus, this can sometimes come across as artificial to seasoned special operators. By emphasizing camaraderie and the concept of teamwork, we believe that positive mental health outcomes will naturally follow.

One of the key aspects of Veterans Backcountry Adventures is the focus on building a community of like-minded individuals who understand the unique challenges that veterans face. By bringing together individuals who have served in special operations units, the organization creates a space where participants can share their experiences, support each other, and form lasting bonds that extend beyond the duration of the trip.

Our organization, Veterans Backcountry Adventures, is dedicated to providing challenging and rewarding outdoor experiences for participants. We meticulously plan, fund, and coordinate these adventures. Using military terminology, we establish the Task, Conditions, and Standards for each trip and develop a CONOP (Concept of Operation) accordingly.

Gorge Fly Shop, a renowned outdoor retailer known for its commitment to conservation and community, plays a crucial role in supporting Veterans Backcountry Adventures. By providing gear, expertise, and logistical support, Travis, Lyndsey, John, Charlie and the whole team at Gorge Fly Shop helps ensure that veterans have everything they need to make the most of their outdoor adventures.

As we continue to recognize and honor the sacrifices made by our military and veterans, organizations like Veterans Backcountry Adventures and partners like Gorge Fly Shop play a vital role in providing support and opportunities for these brave men and women to find peace, purpose, and connection in the great outdoors. By coming together to support these initiatives, we can help ensure that our veterans have the resources and opportunities they need to thrive beyond their service.

Previously, we operated on self-funding, limiting the number of participants and frequency of trips. To expand our reach and impact, we now rely on grants, individual donations, and the generous support of our corporate partners. We are deeply grateful for their assistance, as it has been instrumental in our growth and success.

If you are interested in contributing to our cause, please visit our webpage for donation information. For inquiries regarding corporate sponsorship, please reach out to us directly at inquiry@vbaor.org.

In a world that can often feel divided and disconnected, the power of nature to bring people together, heal wounds, and inspire growth is a force to be reckoned with. Through programs like Veterans Backcountry Adventures, we can harness that power to create a brighter, more connected future for our military, veterans and our communities as a whole.

SafeSpace Toy Drive 2023!

Gorge Fly Shop donations Delivered to SafeSpace in their Brand new location in Hood River!

A huge "Thank You" to everyone who donated to our Toy Drive this year. We truly appreciate each and every donation.

SafeSpace Children's Advocacy center in Hood River Oregon has just moved into their brand new space at the end of December 2023.  I was able to get a tour of their new facilities and really excited for their new space.

Currently SafeSpace serves the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Police and the four tribes they also serve: Umatilla, Warm Springs, Yakima, Nez Perce, in addition to serving Hood River, Wasco, Gilliam, Wheeler and Klickitat Counties.

With your donations and those from our local communities they now have the space they have needed.  This new space will allow them to council more than one child at a time and still allow for complete privacy for the child and family.  Plus, they now have space for onsite mental health counselors, which is a top priority and important step in healing these children.

SafeSpace CAC new building in Hood River Oregon - Look at all that space!

When children are brought in they undergo interviews by local law enforcement, investigators and others depending on the case. Sometimes a physical exam is also needed to complete the process.  This used to be done at Police Stations, Doctors offices, or other official offices. Sometimes it took several days to be completed.  The child had to provide the same details over and over again.  Now these happen all under the same roof.  With the help of modern technology these interviews are completed with the comfort of the child as their top priority.  The team can obtain the information they need and the child is as comfortable as can be.   It is during this time that your donations of toys, stuffed animals, blankets and the backpacks are given out.

Look our "Terry Bear" is waiting to comfort children in their brand new waiting room!

Imagine being a child that is removed from at home and brought in for evaluation or brought in by family or law enforcement. They often have very little of their own personal belongings. SafeSpace presents these children with the blankets, stuffed animals, games and backpacks that were donated by you!

"The smile on their face when they realize they get to keep what we just gave them is priceless. I wish I could share that experience with you, but just know it means so much to each child."
From a SafeSpace child advocate.

These children don't deserve to go through any of this, this is what drives our passion to do what we can to support SafeSpace.  They are giving these children a fighting chance to overcome something they should never have experienced in the first place, they can get the help they need to begin the healing process.

While we call it a "Toy Drive" it's not really set to be specifically gifted to children during the Holiday Season, these gifts are given out and needed for children year round.

We have decided to continue to support SafeSpace not only during the Holiday Season but year round.  There will be a spot on our website where you can make donations, and we will present SafeSpace with a check quarterly.  They have some exciting fundraising planned for 2024 that we will be part of as well.

All of us at Gorge Fly Shop, and SafeSpace Children's Advocacy Center want to extend our sincere appreciation for your generosity and support.

While we are supporting a local SafeSpace CAC, these Child Advocacy centers are all across the country.  This is not something that is talked about, but we owe it to our children to say something if we see something and there are resources out there to help provide support and information.

Please don't be afraid to speak up, our children deserve us to stand up for them!
