The Thomas & Thomas Contact II 1086-4 is one of the most unique fly rods available today. It feels like a 5wt yet has the power of a 7 weight. 

I got to spend several days with the original Contact 1st generation of this rod in Chile fishing for migratory brown trout. The versatility of it was quite impressive. I'm told this Contact II 2nd generation is perfection. Can't wait to put one to use.

While it is designed as a nymph technique rod the versatility lets you choose what you want to do with it. I threw streamers on it without a problem and the length really helped keep line off the water when casting across currents. I really can't think of another rod anything like it.

Nearly three years of development for a fully redesigned, second generation Contact rod Series known simply as Contact II.

Contact II blank construction utilizes five different types of premium quality carbon and fiberglass fibers, bound together by our proprietary aerospace resin system. Aligning these fibers at strategic angles as we roll Contact II blanks improves accuracy, sensitivity, and strength. Components have been carefully selected to maximize performance and comfort. Improved guide spacing moves a “Low Rider” style stripping guide to the butt section of each Contact II, which decreases line sag from the angler’s hand to the first guide.

• Optimized guide spacing with lowered stripping guides to decrease line sag between the hand and first guide 
• Increased backbone power to improve hook sets and assist landing larger fish 
• Extra dense premium Flor grade cork grips increases feel and bite transmission

Chile Brown Trout

I got some time in Chile with the 1086-4 this past spring. What impressed me is this rods feels like a 5 weight in hand yet cast and fights fish like a 7 weight. While labeled a 6 weight it could easily play the role of a serious steelhead rod and still be a lot of fun on above average size trout. It's truly a rod that covers a wide range of utility.
