Friday's Featured Fly - Fly Box Edition

Friday's Featured Fly box edition is Lyndsey Duddles Saltwater fly box that was created and designed by Travis Duddles and Charlie Piette.  It's important to have a fly box with a vast array and options.  You never know what the weather conditions will be or what the fish like at that time.  Some days during our trip we would change flies all throughout the day.....and sometimes we went all day without changing the pattern.  But you may have to change the fly after a few fish.....they sure can tear up a fly.  So make sure you have more than one of each pattern in your box.

Do you need help putting a fly box together.......we would love to help.  Give the shop a call (541-386-6977) and let us know what you are looking for and what you want to spend and we will hand curate a fly box for you.

Success defined by the finer details

Success in the salt comes down to the finer details.  Having the right terminal tackle can truly be the difference between success and failure.  You can count on Scientific Anglers Absolute Saltwater Fluorocarbon when the shot of a lifetime materializes.  It has excellent knot strength, abrasion resistance and is stiff enough to turn your fly over in the wind.

Scott Sector Fly Rods - New for 2020

New for 2020 - Scott Sector Fly Rods

Replacing the popular, award winning Scott Meridian is an all new saltwater rod called the Sector.
Imagine a rod that casts tight high line speed loops effortlessly and turns over your leader straight into the wind; a rod that delivers the fly on target with just one false cast, and can pick it back up and redirect if the fish changes course; a rod that is intuitive so you can focus on the fish instead of your cast; a rod that feels light and alive in your hand and has the touch and feel needed to make short quick shots or float the fly in quietly. All that, plus a rod hand crafted with the very best components to ever grace a fly rod

Introducing the all new Sector Series of high performance, hand crafted fly rods from Scott.

Sector fly rods advance our award winning ReAct technology with new tapers and our new Carbon Web.

They also introduce the most cutting-edge fly rod components ever created.

Scott's all new Carbon Web technology improves torsional stability and rod durability by encasing the unidirectional fibers in a web of ultra-light multi-directional carbon fiber. These fibers help counteract torsional forces giving you better tracking and power for long line pickups and redirecting casts. They also help to reduce the propagation of micro fractures from stress or impact that can run in unidirectional layups.

Sector rods are fit with newly designed components that defy harsh saltwater environments, redefine reliability, and enhance angler experience. They feature all new Ceracoil stripping guides with nickel titanium frames and super slick Zirconia inserts, along with Recoil nickel titanium snake guides for low friction and corrosion free performance. The guide sets are PVD coated in a low reflective coating for even greater durability and stealth.

The reel seats are milled from aircraft grade aluminum and feature self-indexing slide hoods, extra deep knurling to easily turn lock rings with wet hands, type 3 mil-spec hard coat in non-reflective flat black, and line weight engravings for quick rod identification.

Flor grade cork grips are turned to our modified wells shape, and the new fighting butts feature a thick soft rubber for greater comfort in tough fights or while bracing on long casts.

No need to dream about your perfect fly rod- It's here. The new Sector Series from Scott.
Features -

  • Ceracoil stripping guides combine nickel titanium - shape memory frames with super slick, high-tech Zirconia inserts for a new patent pending guide that will never corrode, will return to its original shape if bent, and has the lowest coefficient of friction for better line shooting.
  • Scott's all new Carbon Web technology increases torsional stability and rod durability by encasing the unidirectional fibers in a web of ultra-light multi-directional carbon fiber.
  • New FiberFuse enhanced resin system uses new chemistry to create bonds between each graphite fiber that are over 20% stronger than conventional epoxy resins.
  • ReAct - Brings together X-Core with a new complex materials and taper system to dramatically increase recovery speed.
  • X-Core Technology - Enhanced feel, incredible stability, and unequalled performance. X-Core combines the industry's most advanced composite technologies with cutting-edge design.
  • Mil-Spec III - Anodized reel seats and Ti titanium guides offer the highest levels of corrosion resistance.
  • Natural Finish
  • ARC - Advanced Reinforced Carbon reduces torque and increases strength.
  • Handcrafted in the USA - Built from beginning to end in Montrose, Colorado

New from Sage - "BOLT"

"BOLT" = Ultra Fast Action
Built on Generation 5 Technology in Freshwater and Saltwater sizes

Sage BOLT - Freshwater Handle

Complementing the award-winning, medium-fast action ACCEL, Sage’s new BOLT fly rod family is the ultra-fast action take on Generation 5 technology.

“Anglers looking for long distances, fast line speeds and quick recovery in a fly rod need look no further than the BOLT,” says Sage chief rod designer Jerry Siem. “The ultra-fast action of these rods makes high line speeds and tight loops easier, giving anglers the casting confidence needed in demanding conditions.”

The BOLT comes in a salmonfly blank color highlighted with orange thread wraps and black trim wraps. Fuji ceramic stripper guides and hard chromed snake guides and tip-top complete the blank. A stealth black anodized aluminum up-locking reel seat is on both freshwater and saltwater models, but the freshwater has a rosewood insert and the saltwater models are finished with a fighting butt. All models are finished with a snub nose, half-wells cork handle. A black rod bag with salmonfly logo and model tag and black ballistic nylon rod tube with divided liner come with each model. The BOLT comes in 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 weights in 9-foot lengths and will be available August 2015 and will retail for $650.

Scientific Anglers New Sharkwave Fly Lines

The World’s First Triple-Textured Fly Line

The Development of the SharkWave
When we introduced the Sharkskin™ family of lines in 2007, they weren't simply the latest in a
long line of high-quality innovations. The Sharkskin created an entirely new category of product:
textured fly lines. These lines, developed and manufactured at the Scientific Anglers facility in
Midland, Michigan, represented one of the most interesting and groundbreaking evolutions in
the history of fly line technology.

The benefits of the textured lines were numerous: increased surface area allowed the lines to
sit higher in the water, offering less drag, easier mending, less water spray, and easier pick-ups;
the micro-textured surface trapped air to provide increases in both shootability and flotation—all
while decreasing friction; and the microreplicated pattern increased the durability of the lines,
allowing them to last up to twice as long.

Using what we learned while developing the Sharkskin, we developed the Mastery
Textured series. These lines took the high points of the Sharkskin technology and combined
them with the easy feel of traditional, smooth fly lines, resulting in a textured line that performs
like the Sharkskin, but feels smoother to the touch.

Then something struck us: Let’s take the best parts of the Sharkskin, combine it with the
Mastery Textured series, and see what happens.

The result? Meet the SharkWave, the world’s first Triple-Textured fly line.

Top New Saltwater Fly Lines for 2013

Fly lines are constantly evolving. Each year brings a host of new lines aimed at elevating your fishing. Chances are, you have a fly line that works, but do you have the best line for your fly rod and fishing style? Casting depends not only on the rod, but the line. You may have an eight hundred dollar rod, but if you load it with the wrong arrow, then you might as well have saved your money.

New lines are great because we can upgrade for relatively cheap. You spend a little money and all of a sudden your fishing improves tremendously. New tapers and fresh, clean coatings allow you to hit your target far more efficiently than that old cracked line that you have been fiddling with. So as another year nears its passing, we want to introduce a few Saltwater Lines that no doubt, are already finding their way to the salt.

Hatch Tempest Pliers

I guess the real question is whether or not you spend much time fishing for toothy fish. Do you? Do you want to? If your answer is yes then you might consider a nice pair of pliers.

Hatch Tempest Pliers resemble the same level of quality as their line of fly reels…That is: stout and streamlined construction functioning at the highest level of performance. Hatch has exploded to the top of the high end market. It seems that anglers are willing to pay for goods and services that are grown right here in America and that are worthy of their price tag.

First, the bad news: These pliers do not come with a lanyard, but they do have a hole at the end of one of the handle arms to affix one. The sheath is a durable cordura material, but there is no hole here to attach a lanyard. Lanyards are a good idea, after all, pliers will be of little use to you while laying on the ocean floor! I would suggest buying one separate (or building one) and then fastening it to the belt loop on the sheath.

The rest is gravy. You just know when something feels good in hand- you don’t want to put them down or stop fiddling with them. You want to look at them, feel the movement and put them to use. These pliers will capture your attention. Like their reels, their look is more crisp than flashy. They are available in clear/red or grey nickel.

Hatch Tempest Pliers
They are fairly long. At 7 ½ inches they provide enough distance to keep those fingers from becoming a snack. Also, with this added length, anglers can get more leverage when removing hook from jaw.

The specs are as follows:

-Weight: 5.6 oz

-The I-beam arms are crafted from 6061T6 aluminum and protected with Type II Anodize.

-The jaws and cutting blades are made from stainless steel and plated with electroless nickel for corrosion resistance.

-Both the jaws and blades are replaceable at the factory.

The most innovative detail about these pliers is the fact that they have two cutters – one on each side. This makes the act of clipping mono, braid or wire much more efficient. Furthermore, if one of the clippers has an issue, then you have another for back up. The blades they use are ultra sharp and instead of coming together to crimp for the cut, the blades actually pass by one another in a shearing motion. The result is a clean cut! So far the word is that they hold up for quite a while, but if the teeth get damaged it is no problem to simply have them replaced.
